Long Covid

Anyone else lost their sense of smell and/or taste having contracted Covid? I’ve not regained either and it’s been 6 weeks since I’ve had the virus? Starting to become a bit concerned that it’s permanent.

Any other ailments that anyone is struggling to recover from?

I had Covid last November. It was rough going & I had to have several stress tests ; X-Ray's etc just to check on my chest area.
Also deffo' noticed the 'brain-fog' that people talk about .
Could you arrange for a check-up re your symptoms ?

I had COVID way back in October and although it didn't make me particularly unwell, I did lose my sense of smell. It took a long time to come back and I'm not sure it is quite back to normal even now. Just small things like a favourite smell doesn't seem to have the same impact, prefer different fragrances. My son lost his sense of taste and that came back first, he used to put volcanic hot spicy sauces on everything as it was the only thing he could taste.

The NHS advice is to seek medical advice four weeks after the end of your illness. It won't hurt to check out the advice on the NHS website.

I had it in February. It was was a weird as I never had any real symptoms other than hot flushes in bed (I'm not even sure that's a sympton but made me get tested).

The only thing I've found is that I have random boughts of being absolutely knackered. It's been 6 months and I can still go from fine to asleep on the sofa in 5 mins. I just feel a real wave of tiredness coming on then wake up 20mins later.

It's also really effected my running. I struggle to do things I did months ago. I'm really not convinced by breathing etc is back to normal. I just feel sh#gged doing suff that wouldn't bother me.

That said I never had any issues at the time. No loss or smell/taste etc.

You can try retraining your senses by sucking on a slice of lemon, sniffing air freshener, that sort of thing. It's only anecdotal evidence but I knew a few people who that has helped

I didn't actually test positive for covid but when my smell and taste went it was around 4 weeks from loss to mostly recovered.

I used candle oils daily to test it out. Not sure it helped but I found it fascinating at the time as things started to return.

I had covid at the end of May. It absolutely wiped me out for the best part of 3 weeks. I lost sense of smell and taste. Generally I’m fine now, occasionally unusually tired and smell hasn’t returned with the exception of a couple of things (really strong lemon smells and an alcoholic degreasing agent we use at work, again very strong scent).

I have been wondering if I should go see GP to see if there is any advice but suspect there is very little they can do - guess you just have to wait and see.

I bought a new £1 air-freshener for the car yesterday. I took it out of the cellophane and took a blast. Nothing! Usually it would make my eyes water it’d be that strong! 🙈

That is what I was told after my tests - just wait to see how the body deals with it. That said, everyone is different and there may be different issues.

Got my sense of taste back after about a week.. I had a strong chemical smell in my nose that stayed for much longer (like after going to the swimming baths) Fatigue has been the worst just not having the energy to get up and about.. brain fog has made it really difficult for me to work, basic stuff taking 10 times longer!

Ooh and the aches in my joints, covid is a right meff! Defo on the mend but taking much longer than I’d have thought. Take care buddy and in the style of the Yorkshire men sketch from monty python.. NO SENSE OF SMELL? Absolute Heaven!

I think that a few 'take-aways' from all of this are the importance of trying to stay as active and healthy as you can be ( both mentally and physically ) . This board helped me last year , although I work & have a family , it was nice to have a connection with home even though I don't personally know people who post on here!
