Middlesbrough school children are enjoying the use of a playground once more after refurbishment works were carried out.
New play equipment has been installed by Middlesbrough Council at the Glebe Road site in the town’s Newport Ward, just off Union Street.
The investment has been made using cash from the Town’s Fund ward initiatives pot and includes a slide, stepping logs, “twizzy” bars for climbing, a sports wall and tyre park.
Other improvements include a small cycle track around the inside perimeter of the park, new benches and litter bins and an additional CCTV camera.
First to use the equipment were pupils from Newport Primary School, on St Paul’s Road, who had previously written to staff at Thirteen Housing Group asking for improvements to the park.
These were then fed back to the council who identified the funding that could be used and created the plan.
Cllr Theo Furness, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “It’s great to see the kids enjoying the park again.
“One of the things I want to achieve is an increase in people using the parks across Middlesbrough and improve the quality of facilities that are on offer.
“Some of that will be through our investment, and some through external funding but I want to set out investment plans for our award-winning parks and green areas in Middlesbrough so that the public can see how we want them to develop.”
Newport Primary School head teacher Patricia Maxwell said: “The learning of our children has been greatly enhanced from working alongside community partners.
“The work that they have taken part in has resulted in wonderful positive changes in our local environment. It has been paramount in our pupils
understanding of the power of their voice and has enthused them to take a pro-active role in the local community.”

Thirteen’s community resilience team have been working closely with Newport Primary School to gather the views of local children on how they would like to improve the area.
