Sod it, just go with that.
Intelligence and football intelligence are completely different things. Thick as mince in school doesn’t mean they can’t be a good manager.Sick of having to write the same message but this is 2022. Managers need to have some intelligence. You can't just keep appointing people because they were good players/captains etc because that is a completely different job. I know people that went to school with some of the names mentioned (Leadbitter and Cattermole) and both were described as great footballers but thick as mince. If we appoint another manager like Woodgate I will completely lose faith in Gibson and will be fully aboard the change of ownership train.
That was true in the 90s but these days it is very data driven. You can give it a go and act like we're still in the 90s and try and just shout instructions and tell people what they should be doing but if you aren't using the data then it will be being used against you by the opposition. If they know we always leave a certain area clear from set pieces they can exploit it, if they know that McNair runs like he's playing on treacle they can play balls in behind him, if they know we over-commit and are weak to counter-attacks then they will exploit it. If you can't analyse that live during a game and react to changes as and when they happen because you aren't intelligent enough to understand the data in real-time then you are going to be at a disadvantage.Intelligence and football intelligence are completely different things. So why don’t we employ Carol Vordeman or Rachel Riley as manager then? That was true in the 90s but these days it is very data driven. I'm not saying that an unintelligent person can't be a good manager. It's just becoming less likely as time goes on.
Also, those people that said they were thick as mince was based on their schooldays. They might have grown up and become more intelligent as they've got older. Kids that are only interested in football might have just been not bothered about learning anything else rather than being dumb.
Intelligence has to be applied. Having people that don't understand football wouldn't work either. Obviously the solution is to have intelligent people that are involved with football. So why don’t we employ Carol Vordeman or Rachel Riley as manager then?
I think we’ll have to agree to disagree. I’m still reading your argument as ex players who weren’t very intelligent can’t make good managers because they can’t process info and make rational decisions to adapt to it.
So what you’re saying is some intelligent people might not make very good managers, and some unintelligent people might make good managers. Excellent.Intelligence has to be applied. A simple example that we are regularly exposed to would be pundits. There are some of them like Gary Neville that are obviously intelligent and has experience of football at the highest level and he clearly understands and explains complex situations. You also have pundits like Jamie Redknapp who struggles with any of that and regularly gets the exasperated eyeroll when he speaks from someone like Souness that isn't an idiot.
It's not perfect and there is no guarantee that Neville would be a better manager than Redknapp, but if I was going to give one of them the manager job when they have no previous history of managerial success as a guide then I'd be going with Neville.
*I know Neville failed miserably at Valencia but that was such a weird job to take as his 1st job when he didn't even speak the language.
I think you have to be careful assuming some ex players are ‘thick as mince’ when they may just lack a bit of education but I think you are spot on that a football director, manager or coach these days has to have plenty between their ears to have any hope of succeeding, particularly in the Championship where you may have a less than ideal mix of players.Intelligence has to be applied. Having people that don't understand football wouldn't work either. Obviously the solution is to have intelligent people that are involved with football.

Kevin Thomson did very well as manager of Kelty Hearts getting them promotion with a ppg of 2.11, last season. If we're just chucking names out, can we start the Juninho rumour? Rav as assistant. Beck, Emerson and Mustoe behind the scenes somewhere. Gary Walsh as Roary.
Kevin ThomsonHave we had an ex player who has been a successful manager?
I suppose they have to get experience somewhere.
