Kenyan tree planting initiative

Interesting project in Kenya aiming to plant 100 million trees. Wonder how something like that would go down here?
Too much land taken up by too few greedy land owners to make it work here I guess, but seems a fairly simple approach to trying to do something positive -

The government were talking about a similar scheme here (obviously they’ve had other things, i.e. themselves, on their minds) Part of the plan was to plant over most of the Lake District and other national parks.

When I was in the school I had my behaviour students working with local community groups and the National Trust wardens clearing areas and planting trees. The project of encouraging people to plant trees must have been running for the last decade.

You used to be able to apply to the National Trust and they would supply you with a variety of trees. We planted Rowan, Alder, Ash and Silver Birch on what was the golf course at the side of the King George V ground in Guisborough.

All those projects are good, but this is on a different scale. I dare say most people aren’t aware of the schemes above, unfortunately. Kenya are having an actual public holiday to encourage the entire population to go out and plant trees, which are provided for them. Everyone gets an opportunity to make a contribution to it. I’m sure it’s not perfect, but it is pretty radical.

We ought to reforest all the moors 👍
Certainly not. Peatlands are important in the fight against climate change, acting as a carbon store. They are more efficient than trees in storing carbon.
Much commercial afforestation in the UK has taken place on peatland. This has involved drainage which has caused peat to dry out and release it's carbon into the atmosphere. Peatland is now being restored including the removal of tree plantations as at May Moss on the NYM.

FFS, the Tories and their mates tried (and thankfully failed) to take over The National Trust to get their grubby leeching mits on all the land that it owns so what interest do you think they have in covering any land in millions of trees? Unless of course temporarily if there’s votes in to save their slimy skins!

Are you sure that all our moorland is peatland ?
