keeping/replacing Rodgers/Crooks

Looking at the table, another two wins/6 points would have us bang in contention.

If we'd kept Rodgers/Crooks or replaced them, would we have those 6 extra points?

Thin margins.....

If Carrick had have brought Dieng straight back into the side we'd be at least 3 points better off in my opinion.

A combination of a lack of recruitment in January and some poor managerial decisions has resulted in us being where we are, but Carrick now seems to have learned and is getting it right.

I was thinking about the points gap last night and there are loads of games (when we still had Crooks / Rogers) which we should have won and made up the gap.

Huddersfield Home - Drawn
Sheff Wed Away - Drawn
Plymouth Away - Drawn
Bristol City Away - Lost
Hull Home - Lost
Rotherham Away - Lost
Rotherham Home - Drawn

The draws we should have won. The losses should have been draws at a Minimum. Our inability to finish chances and mess ups at the back cost us dearly.

Considering the injuries we’ve had this year and playing a good chunk of the season without a striker, it’s amazing we are where we are. Latte Lath has shown what a difference a recognised striker can make. We made a huge error in not signing another striker in January. Even a stop gap loan signing would have been better than playing Greenwood up top.

Rotherham *2 stands out, and they were both here at the time. That said, it’s easy to pick out games and say we should’ve won them, without looking at the games where we got lucky.

That was the other caveat I was going to add to my post but forgot.

Across a season there are multiple factors which collectively contribute to where you finish.

We’ve had some bad luck with injuries, gifted too many goals through individual errors and lacked a bit of quality in front of goal (All season).

I don't think either have been consistent enough this season to miss. Crooks more of a threat around the box and Rogers had started to show a bit of form (particularly in cup games) but injuries are the reason we're not up there, and we had poor runs while they were both at the club.

Our traditional post Christmas slump actually saw us having two league wins before February was out, at Millwall and Leicester, so not all bad.

It was the injuries that screwed us in Dec/Jan.

Just from the top of my head (there are more examples) Hull and Coventry we were comfortable and winning but only had Engel/Bangura (cant remember which) on the bench as a recognised first team player. We had no legs to make subs and ran out of gas. Rotherham away was a similar story.

I pretty confident in saying if we never had player x14 out injured/unavailable for most of the season, we would have gained more points.

We've been inconsistent because we've had to make constant changes throughout the team.

The biggest factor for me is individual mistakes at both ends of the pitch. If we'd been better up front and at the back we'd be top 6 by now. And then injuries.

Every single team, especially in the championship, will have a list like this of games they should have won but all the teams above us will have us in a similar list. We have won or drawn plenty that we "shouldn't".

It's not as simple as saying "would keeping X have been enough to get 6 points". In reality a player like Rogers is a small percentage improvement on our team. He's only one of 11 players on the pitch at a time so a 10% improvement at best? To have had an extra 6 points since Rogers left would have given us a points per game (in the 9 games since he left) of 2.11 when we have had 1.44, a 46% increase. He would not improve us by anyway near that amount.

Totally agree. Forgot to add the caveat.

Collectively, we just haven’t been consistent enough but there are varying factors for some of those results. Mistakes, Bad Officiating, Missing good chances etc. Frustration levels have been off the scale at times this season.

I think we've missed Rogers. I think after getting back in the team at the start of December/end of November he'd been excellent. Assists against Preston, Swansea, Huddersfield ,Millwall and Rotherham, the winning goal against West Brom. Comfortably our best player against Coventry at home.
I think it's a bit of an untrue cliche that seems to have become set in stone that he was only good in the cup games.
I mean who can forget that six inch pass to set up our winner against Swansea!🤪
