This is a brilliant idea - keep fit exercises for over 50s that do not require being online. The short programmes started this week and are repeated several times a day and feature exercises that can undertaken by those that need to sit as well as those that can stand. Keeping fit for all during the pandemic - on freeview.
Here is the press release - please do pass this on to anyone you may know that might be isolated and struggling to keep themselves fit and healthy.

A SERIES of short television programmes about keeping fit and healthy during winter have been created for those aged 50 and above and living in Teesside.

The North East Live programmes will provide a simple way for people to access health and wellbeing advice, especially if they don't use social media or the internet.

Middlesbrough Council is behind the initiative in partnership with Public Health South Tees, Sport England and Age UK Teesside, and the first programme will be aired on Monday, November 23 (so they have already started).

The Keeping Well at Home TV programme includes easy to follow four-minute exercise routines that can be done at home. They are aimed at older people, but anyone can take part.

All the exercises follow a gentle pace, and there's also some seated dance routines for those who may find standing exercises a challenge.

As well as helping to keep people active, the programmes will also offer advice on nutrition and falls prevention, mental wellbeing and how to stay safe and well during the winter.

Councillor Dorothy Davison, Middlesbrough Council's Executive member for Adult Social Care & Public Health, said: "With winter drawing closer it's so important for our residents to feel connected and cared for.

"Winter can be a long and lonely time for many, and this year in particular it's important that we provide older residents with access to health and wellbeing advice in a way that's easy for them to access.

"There's no need for a smart phone or social media, and programmes will run throughout the day so people can take part at their convenience as many times as they want."

The programmes will be broadcast across the region on Freeview channel 7, channel 117 on Sky and Channel 159 On Virgin Media.

They will run seven times a day, five days per week for a total of 11 weeks.

Transmission times are as follows:
  • 6.07am
  • 7.07am
  • 8.07am
  • 1.07pm
  • 1.37pm
  • 6.07pm
  • 7.07pm
Those who give the exercises a go will be encouraged to submit their success stories to Middlesbrough Council.

It could be so good for so many people that have been forced to miss their fitness classes this year.

Please do spread the word about this if you know anyone, especially over 50s that might not be online and/or watching exercises on tv could be very helpful.
