Fantastic answer. That said, I'd have been much happier if he'd just called Linekar out for being the **** he is.

Our nation's pundits and media/writers etc are vile. They really are a cancer to our national team.

Ferdinand, as an example, absolutely berated our win v Serbia.

This is a guy who did next to f**k all for England during a time he was winning trophy after trophy, at the highest level, at Man Utd.

Ferdinand, like many of the ex pro's who are now pundits/writers seriously need to start helping the nation, instead of dividing it.

I couldn't give 2 sh*ts if we played terribly throughout the whole tournament, but picked up that trophy. A bit like Portugal a few Euro's ago.

You Marv….are an outlier though

I’ve listened to every ‘The rest is football’ podcast with lineker shearer and Micah Richards
They are brilliant actually. Informative and like listening to your mates in the pub.

Lineker and shearer frequently comment about their dilemma of knowing how it is playing for your country versus a duty to the watching public who see a poor performance and if they don’t see it as it is and name it then they will get massively criticised themselves as being biased - so with heavy hearts they give their honest assessment which is the only way to be.

Lineker, the other day on one of the latest podcasts said that Southgate , in naming Calvin (who is and was Shyte btw) Phillips as someone we missed and couldn’t replace as insulting to the current midfielders in mainoo and Wharton - and incidentally, Wharton can do that role better than Phillips by a mile imho -
Lineker went on to say that it was unusual for Southgate to do something like this and name players not here but he’s obviously feeling the pressure.

Southgate is the one at fault and he needs calling out. For me, he’s lost his way and the game has moved on tactically and he hasn’t from holding onto a lead with the top teams who now look to control possession when they are in front, not concede ground and possession.

If Southgate really knew what he was doing tactically, wouldn’t he be screaming at rice, stones, Kane et al to get up the pitch versus Denmark ?
Of course he would but he is incapable of reading the situation or not brave enough to really challenge the players

To be clear, I had no issue with what GL is supposed to have said, if he said the game was a bit 💩 I’d agree with him..
I think the report was being a bit mischievous trying to sow division…
But I do think HK handled it brilliantly suggesting pundits like Gary do make a difference with their comments…
 
No problem with what either said. Pundits (be they former players or not) should say it how it is just as us fans do. You can’t polish a turd so to speak. Players generally need thick skins, so I’m sure can handle a bit of criticism.
 
The journalist was just fishing for a snap back quotable response. Anyone who actually listens to or watches Lineker’s podcasts will know he’s just speaking honestly and is nowhere near as negative as he is being portrayed here. At the end of the day these ex players are paid to give opinions because of their experiences and do the job very well. You can’t expect them to blindly support every action and decision by the England team.

First of all, GL did make that exact comment about the game and he was right to do so because if they’d glossed over it I would’ve thought, like the many fans listening, WTF, what game was GL actually watching !!??

GL went on to say, along with shearer, it’s not personal to anyone but we have to speak and just say what we see otherwise people listening will just think we are stupid, GL went onto say, Southgate and Kane have also not defended their performances and they have really said the same as us, it’s not been good enough so what’s the issue ?

If we can’t be objective and honest it’s pointless being here - we love England and want them to do well but have to say what we see 🤷‍♂️

Kalvin Phillips won the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 player of the tournament but I admit is poo now. The rest of your post is bang on
