Who doesn’t love Chris Kamara?!

One of several fellers from the town who are famous and are yet remain down to earth decent folk who are just total class, and make me more proud to be a Boro fan.

I know his playing career with us was short, but he is a true Boro lad.

This excellent short promo video had me thinking that someone should produce a series of short films about Middlesbrough icons, Kammy, Gibbo, Mogga, visiting their old haunts and reflecting on where they’ve come from.

In collaboration with Middlesbrough FC, the latest video from Vertu Motors sees ex-professional footballer and Soccer Saturday legend Chris Kamara take a trip down memory lane in his home town.

Kamara called time on his 24-year stint with Sky Sports this season, which included working on iconic shows such as Soccer Saturday, Goals on Sunday & SoccerAM.

The annoucement was received warmly on social media by former colleagues and fans alike, who grew up with ‘Kammy’ on their TV screens.

Reminiscing about his childhood and growing up in the North East of England, Kamara talks about his father's work and his family's hardships.

"I am Boro born and bred," said the 64-year-old, "It was where I was made; I will always be grateful for that.

"My dad worked in the blast furnace and the chemical paints department, which were two dangerous jobs, but they were vital for the town back in the day.”

"We were the first black family in the area, which was really challenging for my mum and dad.

"If anything bad happened on the estate, they would blame it on my dad."

'Kammy' made over 600 appearances in his professional career, which included a brief loan spell with his hometown club in 1993, which had been a childhood dream of Kamara ever since he first stepped foot in Ayresome Park.

"Going to a football match as a young lad blew my mind," continued the Middlesbrough native. "To be able to play the game professionally was incredible.

"As a kid, it was always my main ambition to play for Boro, and I first went to Ayresome Park in 1966."

The video ends with a visit to the Middlesbrough training ground, where Kamara speaks to Boro defender and, more importantly, academy product Dael Fry.

Kamara lauds the youth setup at the club and the ability of Fry, who, when speaking to Kamara, mentions his childhood footballing hero.

Kamara finishes with: "The great thing about Middlesbrough Football Club is that they produce great youngsters, and Dael Fry is no exception – I have no doubt he'll play for England one day.

Fry adds: "My favourite player when I was younger was Steven Gerrard, I had his shirt, and every time I scored, I would shout his name!"
