Juniors 1961

Our reserve team played in the North Eastern League from 1906/07 right through to the 1957/58 season. It then changed to the North Regional League from 1958/59 to 1968/69. The 1968/69 saw our reserves play in 2 leagues, with the other one the North Midland League, where we stayed until the 1982/83 campaign when we joined the Central League.

The Northern Intermediate League started in the 1950/51 season, which is where our juniors (U18s) played right until the Academy system came into force in 1998.

At different stages of our history we've even fielded a 4th side in leagues such as the Wearside League (1947-55), Northern Alliance (1995-97) and Middlesbrough & District Junior League (1963-65)

Shaun many thanks. Names was about all I needed. It has left me with a lot of puzzlement as may of the names I was expecting are not there and some are in different years than the ones I was expecting.

Goes to prove that memories get dimmed with time. I've a feeling that I looked in the Boro who's who and Gordon Jones and Frank Spraggon are the same school year, yet they play 2 years apart.

It's like Family History - always go back to the original record for the best information. Anything that relies on transcription or third parties can become corrupted

Rishworthian - Ive found another ledger which has a host of names on of players who signed Northern Intermediate League forms at that time. It doesn't say if they actually played though.

Additions to the ones above are:

1960
David Walker
Kevin Morley
Peter Mulholland
Anthony Hetherington
Don White
Brian Lowson
Rodney Poole
Len Walker
Colin Sibley
Keith Vallely
Michael Dunn
Ronald Harding
Keith James
Robert Carr
James Lawton
John Gill
Geoff Hatton
Doug Morris
John Seaman
Geoff McKimmie
Gareth Moody

There is a Michael McNicholas - Signed NIL forms on 26/12/1959 and played junior football for us through till the 1961/62 season

Jones and Spraggon were actually 3 years apart at school.

Frank Spraggon (DOB 27/10/45) signed apprentice forms on 24/4/1961 and full time professional ones on 5/11/1962

Gordon Jones (DOB 6/3/43) signed apprentice forms on 12/8/58 and full time professional ones on 7/3/1960

Now this is interesting. I'd better start by by putting my glasses on. I use them but rarely

However I read Jones as Sept plus 1944 and Spraggon as pre summer 1945. It left me puzzled to be honest as it wasn't what I'd expected to read and your words make much more sense

Michael McNicholas will almost certainly be the guy who captained South Bank and I noticed Kenneth Thwaite playing in the 61 team. ( Normanby Hall cricket)

I did of course notice Bill Gates along with Gordon Jones in the 60 team and I wasn't quite sure if Don Masson would have been in the same group as Arthur Horsefield but I noticed he was along with Billy Horner.

You havn't got the leger for the 61 "crew"/draft/ team have you by any chance ?
