Juniors 1961

Does anyone have any memorabilia or records, team sheets for the juniors in 1961

We know Frank Spraggon played and strangely enough Pete Fletcher also played. He went on to play for Scarborough in the Midland League and then came back for 2/3 seasons at South Bank

The vast majority were local lads back in the day

Any help would be greatly appreciated Erimus ? Statto ?

Turned up Mick McNicholas former South Bank captain was part of the team and Kenny Thwaites who was the main man at Normanby Hall cricket in later years. There's a suggestion that there was a "do" and presentation at Sparks cafe, Linthorpe Road and maybe a photo that might have made the Gazette - not clear if it was the team or just the award winners

Any help to anyone

Hi Rishworthian, I'm at my sons at present, I have some early teamsheets, think early 60's

Once home later this evening I will have a look see what I have

Erimus - looks like you've drawn a blank. There was a photo of the presentation ceremony in the Gazette and we can add another name Brian Clements who was in the police

So that's 5 of them only another 6 to go

I think a lad called Bernard (Barney) Day was an apprentice / junior then. Middlesbrough lad who had a long Northern league career with Whitby South Bank and Billingham Synthonia. Dont know exact year he was there but definitely around then. Was a good friend of my late father, sadlly Barney passed away a couple of years ago as well.
Arthur Horsefield was same age as Frank Spraggon so will probably have been in same youth team. Found this 1st team photo of the next season thought it may be of some help in your search

Barny was Billy's son wasn't he?

Not that I know of, at least it was never mentioned to me by my father or Barney for that matter.

Sorry Rishworthian, been busy, my earliest teamsheet is 1963, I'm unable to check at this moment but will check before I go to work tonight

Barney isnt the son of former Boro player Billy.

Rishworthian - Boro didnt issue anything for junior games in those days apart from the FA Youth Cup games played at Ayresome. There were programmes up to 1963 for reserves games, and teamsheets after that.

I have a FA Youth Cup programme versus Everton in the 1960/61 season if thats any use. I can certainly pass on the team lineups from those games. Im away working at the minute but back on Wednesday.

A guy I know who used to run local football teams in Billingham called Billy Povey would have been playing for the juniors around that time also Alec Smith who played a good number of games in the first team and later became kit man was probably in that age group.

That's wonderful after 60 years sometime after next Wednesday can hardly be called a delay

I nearly misread your comments about programmes for reserve games as I knew I had one for 1957/8 ish. I just went to see if this new winger was as good as the Gazette were suggesting - his name Ed Holliday, and he was. I'm fairly sure that is now in Erimus' safe care

see shaun's comment - save yourself some hard work

Oh and I found another programme v Mansfield away in the cup we had Ray Lunn on the left wing - real name Lugg. If you havn't got a copy I'll stick it in the post as I'm not due up imminently, I don't think. We lost 2-0 on a horrible wet afternoon and the pies were crap at the local butchers but the ale wasn't too bad

We did the double over them that season in the league, 5-4 at Field Mill, all headers?

This is from 1962-1963 season, but it may be of interest because much of this kind of stuff does not normally survive.

It is the then 17 year old Arthur Horsfield's personal scoring record in the Northern Intermediate League and reserves for the second half of that season.

You are dead right this sort of thing does not survive and that the Northern Intermediate League was the Juniors league. That scoring record is a bit special.

I cannot remember the league the reserves played in. I'm fairly certain it was not the Central League which most of the big clubs were in. I had a feeling it was the Northern League but I may well be wrong. I know the game with Ed Holliday in it was v South Shields and the former centre forward from Newcastle, Monkhouse, was playing for them

Boro reserves played in the North Regional League for most of the 60s, until it was wound up.
