Jones’ chance

Jones will come again, same thing happened to Stuart Ripley when he burst on the scene teams doubled up on him and he suffered a loss of form....he just adapted his game a bit and learned when to take his man on and when to keep his powder dry...it happens to all the good wingers. I have every faith in Jones 👍

Wilkinson and Slaven couldnt fail with Ripley and Hendrie firing in crosses

I've heard that Jones has been going through a pretty rough time mentally off the pitch the last few months which has obviously affected how he is on the pitch and it looks like the club have given him that support which is great.

But I like Jones and he will come good again but that is one hell of a save, if it was our keeper we'd be buzzing over the save and not questioning the finish.

I look forward to seeing the old Jones back again 👍

Ripley was hit & miss.

He'd stand the fullback up and then push the ball past them towards the goal line, turn on the afterburners & get there just in time to swing his foot at the ball.
Ball would then either arc majestically into the box or be sliced into the Holgate.
I seem to remember more of the latter, but then I am a negative b***r.

I think he became a better footballer after the hamstring issues but obviously a less explosive one.

I'd expected Jones' chance to be Vossen-esque: blasted hard at the centre of the goal when a more composed finish into the corner would have scored.

Like Vossen, he forced the keeper into a great save. Unlike Vossen, there wasn't much more he could have done with it.

I am with the others, not a thing he could be expected to do, other than get it on target which he did. From the angle he did have limited options.

One thing apparent from that clip is how congested the final third was. Its little wonder we struggled to create clear cut chances. West brom defended brilliantly. I did say on Saturday that had Jones' shot gone in, we, maybe, see a different game.

I though Jones attempt was in added on time, it was too late anyway for a comeback wasn’t it? Or have I got that wrong?

Great save in my opinion.

My memory was 20 minutes to go, but let me caveat that by saying I had a couple of beers watching the early match then a couple of cans watching boro🍻

I don’t, Ripley never had a loss of form for a full season, he had maybe a sticky 3 months.

I see some serious technique issues with Jones and a fragility to his confidence. He needs to sort those out if he’s going to make it at this level. Hope he proves me wrong

Even off the boil I don't think he was useless mart. He didn't help himself by being outstanding because that's what you end up comparing him with.

He has, generally, been a bit quiet when coming on, albeit in cameos.

Holgate Jones didn't come on until the 78th minute so you may well be right.

I hope the same thing doesn't happen with Jones, as it did with Ripley.

.....and by that I mean I ended up crying for days, as we sold him for 1.3m to the soon-to-be champions, apparently I was blubbering for days, muttering "£1.3m isn't enough." I wasn't even in secondary school then mind.

Remember when Ripley went up front for a few games, I think he scored 3 in a 6-1 win v Sheff Utd. He was really quick and at the peak of his powers that day 👍

It was a decent attempt by Jones but that save was a lot easier than it looks. I'll explain why.

During my school and uni goalkeeping days I made a very similar save; I always remember one of the people watching behind the goal swearing when I pulled it off. But here's the thing; it was a far easier save than, say, trying to outwit a striker in a 1v1 coming in on goal. There are two things in the keeper's favour here.

1) The keeper is already moving in the right direction due to following the direction of play. A dive when you are already on the move is a lot easier.
2) Height and power. Jones places the ball in roughly the right place (as he sees it) at around about hip height. Thing about keeping is that there is a height zone between, roughly, your waist and chest where it is easiest to save the ball. The reason is gravity. You literally cannot throw yourself to the floor any quicker than gravity. If a ball is below knee height and a distance from you, you have to bend your knees, rotate your centre line, fall down, push sideways and reach out. By the time you have finished doing that everyone's gone home for tea.

As a non-striker, Jones put the ball exactly where it looks like it ought to go. He didn't risk scuffing it along the floor, gave himself a margin for error by not aiming too close to the post and focused on placement over power because it looked like the keeper would never make it in a month of Sundays. Because he's not a striker or a keeper he didn't realise that he was making the wrong decisions.

Forrs and Akpom (and probably Archer) would all have scored that goal. Akpom would have placed it back across the keeper. Forss would have used power and kept it low. They both have that instinctive knowledge of where a keeper is going and what he can reach.

It's a decent attempt by Jones and it is a good save but it's not a worldie. It does though show the difference between a winger who scores some goals and a striker who specialises in scoring goals.

Yes, he was superb that day, great game that one, one of my favourites along with the 6-0 demolition of Leicester. We were a damned good team in those years

I don't remember that, but think I only saw him for a couple of years and largely only home games. What year was it, I'll see if I can find the stats/ goals.

Ripley was my no 1, and held that until Juninho (spell #1) came along. I don't think I cried when Juninho went after spell 1, as I was trying to be a man then, but I felt physically sick, more than I've ever been upset about breaking up with any ex
