Jonathan Woodgate.

What annoys me is when, in the past, we've had a bad run of results and maybe conceded a few goals then some fans are very quick to blame Woodgate, crap defensive coach, blah blah blah. Doesn't get the credit he deserves Woody.

Almost as bad as going over the top about him after two good results
(is that a run btw)

Without six of our defenders tonight, we looked great defensively. A clean sheet against a dangerous former top of the league team. We play out like he used to do as a player. Credit due to one of our own. (y)
Huge improvement defensively. The best in a long time. We were compact when we needed to be, retained the ball well, shape was excellent throughout, concentration levels from all were spot on and we won a lot of our one on one's which is so important against a team like WBA away from home. Excellent performance.

I made a thread early season after the Leeds game about how much better our defensive unit was this season, and I stand by it. Largely the unit has been excellent, it’s been individual gaffs from Jones, Engel, Clarke, Dieng etc… that have cost us the points. That said in all those games if we’d scored the sitters the gaffs wouldn’t have mattered.

Defence is looking so much more solid this season.
Edmondson looks a real solid defender so far and will be hard to shift from the first team.
Borges looks an upgrade on Engel and is solid enough.
Ayling's experience is showing through and to be honest i think he's a big asset when playing out from the back. He's got a good eye for a longer ball when it's on as well.
