Jon Venables loses parole board bid to be freed from jail

It's morally wrong to execute anyone but especially a person who committed a crime at 10YO. I can't believe anyone would consider executing a child or keep them alive for 8 years and then execute them. Both scenarios are abhorrent.

For a ten year old child to commit the crimes they had, they must have been exposed to a horrific childhood themselves. Those were learned behaviours not instinctual.

If it's possible to corrupt someone to the point of committing horrific crimes, it should be possible to rehabilitate them. I understand it will be too difficult to justify the cost and resources in the majority of serious cases but writing people off at 10 years old and calling for the death penalty is wrong. If you can't fix them, lock them up for life. If you have any doubts about the risk they pose in society, keep them there. It's that simple.

All too easy to just say 'throw away the key'. But unless you want billions of pounds of your taxes to pay for more prisons we can't lock people away for, what, up to 80-odd years in his case. And if you don't want to execute someone for his crimes then, as difficult as it might be, you've got to work a system to minimise the risk to the public so he is let out.

The populist tabloid headlines, reiterated by right wing politicians, tend not to work unless you live in Saudi Arabia.

of course, but people won't accept that for some reason, i think it's easier for people to box things off as "evil" or such like.

Defending a monster that kidnapped a child before doing what they did to him, (unrepeatable) then when released accesses pictures on the net. Wow!!! How very weird.

If you mean me, then if you could point out where I have defended anyone? Beyond saying that putting someone to death to assuage your own feelings is abhorrent. That doesn't mean I want him released or that I want him living in my house as the usual rhetoric goes. He was a child when he carried out his disgusting and vile crimes. If he is not safe to be released (and it appears that the experts in this agree that he is not) then I am content that he continues to be incarcerated to safe guard the wider population.

No excuse for anybody to commit a crime that horrific, doesn't matter what kind of childhood you have, I had a horrific childhood myself with my dad doesn't mean I turned to crime, especially on a w year old baby. At 10 years old you're old enough to know better especially to that extreme. I can't believe on this board they are people that are sticking up for the scum bags.

I don't think anyone is sticking up for them, but you can't bring the death penalty back just for 'child killers' (who are actual children) that you deem to be more evil than anyone else.

Easier to just leave the death penalty alone and keep them locked up until they've served their (hopefully very long) sentences. Unless, of course, one happens to be a full-on nonce, as with this case.

That is your opinion & you are welcome to it. But I believe those scumbags shouldn’t be breathing the same air as myself, in fact they shouldn’t be breathing at all.

Only 55 countries around the world retain and implement the death penalty, and most of those countries, people would consider to be backwards.

Anyone who wants the death penalty is in a minority around the world, and align with regimes such as Iraq, Iran and Suadi who, collectively, are responsible for more than 80% of criminal executions around the world.
