John Coddington RIP

I’ve just received a text stating John Coddington has passed away.

John was a lovely man and one of life’s true gentlemen. In his latter years he suffered with dementia and forgot those he once called friends.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Met him as a teenager when he was introduced to my dad, he was very much a gentleman, but he also made sure he had time for me too rather than just my dad, he ensured I was involved in the brief chat at all times, which was thoughtful. He asked me who my favourite player was and I told him Jim Platt. 10 minutes later, I am introduced to Jim Platt

The last time I saw John was with Matty outside the Riverside. We all spoke fondly and joked with each other and as I walked away I heard John say ‘who is that.’ Matty explained to him who I was but I guess he was non the wiser.

Thoughts and prayers go out to all his family.

He was a Nice man John, we used to have half a day most Fridays and head to the ship, he always made us feel welcome, and would talk about his days at Ayresome park, and asked us about our jobs, he was genuinely interested. And he kept a cracking pint of Magnet. RIP John.

Was going to ask if he was related to Matt, who’s name stood out me as a kid after I’d seen it on a team photo in about 1990. Same as Dale Anderson and Michael Trotter.

John was a centre half but both his son and grandson were goalkeepers.

It's not often remembered that he once scored a goal for Boro when he was with Blackburn. It was almost the exact same goal that Noel Whelan scored, but 30 years earlier. I remember it like it was yesterday.
