Lumley: It's what I train for.

GOALKEEPER Joe Lumley was thrilled after Saturday’s away victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Two strikes early in the first half from Rob Dickie and Lee Wallace respectively gave the R’s the perfect start, but Yannick Bolasie’s header and Seny Dieng’s red card mid-way through the second half ensured for a nervy end on Teesside.

After Mark Warburton’s side were reduced to ten men, Lumley was introduced and two fantastic saves in the dying minutes meant that Rangers were able to cling on to all three points and leapfrog Boro into 10th position in the league table.

"All I can do is keep on working hard every day and take the opportunities when they come.
Joe Lumley "

Speaking to www.qpr.co.uk after the game, Lumley admitted that he had never been in that situation before, saying: “Coming on like that is tough, it’s the first time I have ever had to do it.

“But I enjoyed it, it was great to be out there, and it was a fantastic win for the boys.

“Of course, it’s difficult to come on like that but it was also very enjoyable because even though you are on the bench you always have to be ready. You know Seny is going to start at the weekend, but during the week I still have to train like I am going to start.

“So yes, it was tough, but it was a nice feeling, and it was great for the lads to get the win.”

Following the 26-year-old’s 60th minute arrival, Lumley was on hand to deny George Saville on not one, but two occasions with some amazing reflex saves, ensuring that Rangers returned to the capital with all three points.

Talking about those moments, the R’s shot stopper said: “Those saves at the end were in the moment, it’s what you train for.

“You train so much to make those types of moments a habit, for me when I am at my best I am in auto-pilot and those sort of saves just happen.

“Seny had been excellent in the game and to come and kind of keep the team in it, I have to switch on straight away and simply just do my job.

I hate losing and even in training I want to win everything, so coming on like that and keeping the lead was brilliant and a great feeling.

The clash at the Riverside stadium saw Lumley making only his fifth appearance for Rangers this season and the QPR Youth product was the first to admit that he must take any opportunities when they come his way.

He added: “The other week when I played against Coventry the gaffer put me in because Seny had been away with Senegal and I just loved it.

“I just want to play football, as much as I love the boys winning, when I’m not playing, I want to be involved and it’s tough.

“Of course, Seny has had a great season, he’s been brilliant, we get on really well, but it has been hard, all I can do is keep on working hard every day and take the opportunities when they come.”

Just scrolled through through twitter and the vast majority of QPR fans think he's decent and deserves to be No1 somewhere👍

I imagine they know more about him than us.
Just had a quick look, and it's always a good sign when fans have got good things to say.

Can't say I've ever noticed him/watched him play (apart from that half hour at the Riverside, where he was top class), but for us to go in so early for him, Warnock must rate him.

The main thing this signing has to highlight though, is that surely it means Bettinelli isn't coming back. Great news!

The lowdown on Boro’s first summer acquisition…

  • Joe was born in Harlow, Essex, on February 15 1995.
  • Scouted while playing for local junior side Buckhurst Hill, the goalkeeper joined Tottenham Hotspur as a 10-year-old, along with brother Billy.
  • His hero growing up was a one-time Boro player - Shay Given. Joe and his sibling - who now runs a goalkeeping academy in Australia - would emulate the Irish international when ‘smashing balls at each other’ in the back garden at home.
  • Joe played with the likes of Harry Winks in the Spurs youth set-up, and looked up to Harry Kane who was a few years older. Released as a 16-year-old, Joe remained in north London and made the switch to Queens Park Rangers
  • Linking up with the Rs youth setup, Joe won the Professional Development League Two as an Under-18.
  • While remaining on the books at QPR, he moved up the football pyramid in a series of loan moves, starting at Bishop’s Stortford in the Conference South in 2013/14, having spells with Accrington Stanley, Morecambe and Stevenage in League Two between 2014 and 2016, and eventually playing for Bristol Rovers and Blackpool in League One between 2016 and 2018.
  • In the midst of that series of loans, injuries to Rob Green and Alex Smithies handed Joe the chance to make his Rs debut in January 2016, a 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest. Three days later he made his Championship bow for the club in a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers.
  • Joe established himself as a first team fixture at Loftus Road in the 2018/19 season, making a total of 46 appearances for QPR under the management of ex-Boro boss Steve McClaren. Grant Hall was a teammate.
  • The keeper was handed the number one shirt for the 2019/20 campaign as Mark Warburton took charge, although he shared the gloves with Scot Liam Kelly.
  • Senegalese international Seny Dieg established himself as first choice in 2020/21, with Joe spending time out on loan in League One once again with first Gillingham then Doncaster Rovers. He was, however back in the fold to replace the dismissed Dieng in Rangers’ 2-1 win over Boro back in April, subsequently making a series of saves to preserve the London club’s lead.
  • A keen supporter of football clubs working in the local community, Joe became an official ambassador for the QPR Trust in 2019.

Really. I said he signed and sealed he did not.
'all but a sealed deal' pretty much echoing reports of us being in talks with us.

close but no cigar.

fingers crossed for mo besic tho.. would certainly be a combative midfield if he was in the squad. he's been on big bucks at everton tho

That was in talks. I confirmed he signed. That is a different. Besic wages will not be a issue.

Really don’t need anything special at this level, a solid keeper will do the job which he is. Good signing, onto the next target

What the hang happened in 16/17 at Bristol Rovers?
Theres not much to go on - hes travelled quite a lot

A schoolboy player with Tottenham Hotspur, Joe signed for Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2010.
He gained his first experience of men’s football on loan at non-league Bishop’s Stortford in March 2014 before making his Football League debut for Accrington Stanley, against Bury, that August.
He had further loan stints in League Two with Morecambe and Stevenage before an extended spell of first-team football at League One Bristol Rovers during the second half of the 2016/17 season.
Keeping an impressive eight clean sheets, he built on those performances the following campaign at Blackpool and ended the season making his QPR debut in a 3-1 home win against Birmingham City.
Joe established himself in the first team at Loftus Road at the start of the 2018/19 season and has since made over 70 appearances for the club.
