Two strikes early in the first half from Rob Dickie and Lee Wallace respectively gave the R’s the perfect start, but Yannick Bolasie’s header and Seny Dieng’s red card mid-way through the second half ensured for a nervy end on Teesside.
After Mark Warburton’s side were reduced to ten men, Lumley was introduced and two fantastic saves in the dying minutes meant that Rangers were able to cling on to all three points and leapfrog Boro into 10th position in the league table.
Speaking to www.qpr.co.uk after the game, Lumley admitted that he had never been in that situation before, saying: “Coming on like that is tough, it’s the first time I have ever had to do it.
“But I enjoyed it, it was great to be out there, and it was a fantastic win for the boys.
“Of course, it’s difficult to come on like that but it was also very enjoyable because even though you are on the bench you always have to be ready. You know Seny is going to start at the weekend, but during the week I still have to train like I am going to start.
“So yes, it was tough, but it was a nice feeling, and it was great for the lads to get the win.”
Following the 26-year-old’s 60th minute arrival, Lumley was on hand to deny George Saville on not one, but two occasions with some amazing reflex saves, ensuring that Rangers returned to the capital with all three points.
Talking about those moments, the R’s shot stopper said: “Those saves at the end were in the moment, it’s what you train for.
“You train so much to make those types of moments a habit, for me when I am at my best I am in auto-pilot and those sort of saves just happen.
“Seny had been excellent in the game and to come and kind of keep the team in it, I have to switch on straight away and simply just do my job.
“I hate losing and even in training I want to win everything, so coming on like that and keeping the lead was brilliant and a great feeling.
The clash at the Riverside stadium saw Lumley making only his fifth appearance for Rangers this season and the QPR Youth product was the first to admit that he must take any opportunities when they come his way.
He added: “The other week when I played against Coventry the gaffer put me in because Seny had been away with Senegal and I just loved it.
“I just want to play football, as much as I love the boys winning, when I’m not playing, I want to be involved and it’s tough.
“Of course, Seny has had a great season, he’s been brilliant, we get on really well, but it has been hard, all I can do is keep on working hard every day and take the opportunities when they come.”
