Joe Fagin RIP

My favourite. Just had a marathon session of watching all the episodes right up to the last 2. Quite emotional at times tbh.
Yes NZ, I know what you mean. I’ve got every episode of every series on box sets.
Autumn viewing ready to go…

This has prompted me to find Auf Weidersehen Pet on the ITVX streaming site.

Needed something new to binge watch and should be fun - since the last time I watched it I was probably about 13 yrs old.
Unfortunately I think the re-runs are heavily edited/censored removing 'language and attitudes of the day' 😒

It didn't feel like it, the scenes in the Indian restaurant with Oz mouthing off to the waiter were still in!
Oz ~ Would ya credit it, eh? An Indian waiter what cannat speak any English?

Dennis ~ Well, we are in Germany Oz.

Oz ~ Exactly! Why isn’t he speakin’ English? I mean; he’s one of us, isn’t he? I mean, this is a curry house, isn’t it? Cannat get much more British than that that… can ya… eh?

Dennis ~ Oz… how many times have I been out for a curry with you in England?

Oz ~ I divvent knaa… Half a dozen…

Dennis ~ Aye… and on each occasion, no matter where we’ve been, you’ve called the Indian waiters either “Sabu” or “Gunga Din”… y’kaaw…

Oz ~Aye.(laughing)

Dennis ~ But, now we’re in Germany, you expect this Indian lad to treat ya like some long lost brother.

Oz ~ So what like?

Dennis ~ You would have made a great imperialist, you would!

Similar experience to this Lem, when I was on HMS Exeter.
Shortly after the Falklands the ship visited Newcastle. Apart from two of us, virtually the whole crew were Janners.
After a night on the town with most of my mess, we went for a meal at a Chinese restaurant. Bearing in mind most of us were 10 sheets to the wind.
After a cursory look at the menu, the oriental waiter came to take our orders, and in the strongest Geordie accent imaginable said “Ya ready to order like lads”. You could have heard a pin drop.
Then one of the lads in his strong South Western lilt at the top of his voice shouted out “eeer, that chowg’s got a Geordie accent”.
You couldn’t make it up!
