Jason Steele

He's their backup keeper.

Adds to the homegrown quota without taking up too much in wages and doesn't play in the league.

He's been there 5 years and made 13 appearances, only one of them in the league.
Did well against us.. and Arsenal

There's no law that says 'PL clubs must have at least one dodgy keeper', although it looks that way sometimes!

Wasn’t he doing ok for us until a couple of blunders and got dropped…
I think he was given a rough time after Southgate failed to bring in a top name keeper and stated he’d work with steel and Jones?

Rose tinted’s we’re on as he was home grown, was never really all that but was “the best Steele in our goal”.

Talk to any Mackems, they think he was the worst keeper they’ve ever had.

From memory, Steele was an okay shot stopper, but like some many recent Boro goalkeepers he struggled with crosses and balls into the area. He’s not the tallest and still looks weak.

Not even sure he was even that. Maybe looked promising at first but seemed to let a lot of soft goals in towards the end of his time here.

Was quite good with his feet I think?

Last Boro player to play for Great Britain of course!

I think he was given a hard time at Boro. He was young and inexperienced playing in a tough and unforgiving League. I wouldn't compare him to Jones and Turnbull who chose to spend practically their whole careers as back ups. He was first choice at Boro and left as soon as he lost that spot so he could be first choice at Blackburn, then left Blackburn to stay in the Championship with Sunderland. And he only went to play the role he's playing now as back up after two confidence sapping seasons which ended with him failing to keep his place in a side who got relegated leaking goals for fun.

But he's certainly not at Brighton because he's good enough to play for them. But because he has enough experience as a player to fill in in the very rare circumstance (outside of cup games) he's required to. Not a knock on him, he's certainly good enough for a lower mid table Championship side, but above that he's only really good enough to be a backup keeper. Can't blame the lad for taking that role at the highest level he can.

It was Turnbull and Jones, Steele was a bit later.

Steele was fairly popular for a while though, but keepers in general get a very hard time by Boro fans I’d say.
