James Webb Space Telescope launch today at 12.20 GMT

Really hope all goes to plan. Once in position it has to go through a number of stages to get set up, any of which could fail, fingers crossed. It is amazing it will be able to look back to not long after the big bang

Do we really need to solve the mystery of how the Universe started and how it will end? Listened to Brian Cox who said the physics of the universe is beyond the human mind that people should just accept it is what it is and to not spend any of their 80 years of life paying any attention to it other than a pub chat. Im inclined to agree.

I suppose 10bn isnt that much in the big scheme of things but I cant help thinking the whole thing is just frivilous.

oh no it is amazing, it is exploring and finding out the origins and fundamentals of the Universe. It is also likely to lead to practical applications of the findings.

I suppose that way back in time there was someone who said "what the **** is the use of a wheel".

what practical application have we had so far. teflon ?
The people working on this are having the time of their lives on tax payers money. And then Musk comes along and blows the whole of NASA out of the water.

Seriously, there are literally thousands of inventions attributed to the space race and space exploration.

Here are a few for starters

Interesting list.

Tell me just one listed there that would not have been developed through 60 years of scientific development.

That is an impossibility to answer as I suspect you realise.

The fact is that these were developed as part of mans exploration into space and came as a necessity for that task. To postulate on if any would have been invented without it is pointless as the reality is they where.

For spacey geeks, Prof Brian Cox is doing a couple of ticketed warm up runs of his pending world arena tour at Stockton Globe on 7th/8th Feb

you gotta be dead inside to not care about the origins of the universe, can't understand that mindset myself, the idea that we might never know the answer should never stop us from trying to learn more. We might never win the league, but should we just stop playing?!
