Jackie was born in 1889 and signed for the Boro in 1910 after South Bank were in the amateur cup final

He was not resigned for the 1930/31 season

Hence if his final season was 1929/1930 and assuming he played in that season he must have been 40

but he doesn't seem to appear in any of the record books

I know he is still in the top 10 lists for appearances and goals but you would expect that after a career of that length
You wonder if he has got missed out or if he'd not played in his last season

When I was a kid, on holiday in Devon, I was with my dad and he got talking to a local man, an old timer. The conversion turned to football and he said
'You support Boro. They used to have a player called Jackie Carr. He was the most complete footballer you ever saw.'
'You saw Carr play?'
'No I didn't see him but when I was in the Army, I got into a bit of trouble and I had to spend a short time in the Glasshouse. I had to share a cell with a lad from Middlesbrough, and he never stopped talking about football !'

Jackie Carr is in the Boro record books. Stats below Taken from Wikipedia - he went to Blackpool in 1930 - the truth is players careers went on and on because they could hardly afford to stop playing. Jackie eventually became a landlord of a pub but died tragically young in 1942 aged 49. I actually spoke with his son, a lovely old guy living in Redcar and he lent us some old photos for display in Dorman Museum. Funnily enough the sons of George Camsell and Jackie Carr both attended William Turner Grammar school in Redcar where they were made to play rugby rather than football. That was despite having England international players as a dad.

I am with you now. You mean in the record books as oldest player - I think he was 38 years old and not 40 when he played his last game. Born 1892.

Interesting

I saw a bit of an extract of the family history with an aged cousin which is where I think I got the 1889 from

I didn't realise he'd been a publican. I seem to remember he named his house in Easson Road in Redcar as Ayresome Park.

I remember brother George was a publican in North Ormesby

There were 5 Carr Brothers, 4 of whom played for the Boro but only 3 ever got on the field at the same time in England's top division. It is a feat that has never been repeated including the Premier League era

Xmas day 1912 - Jackie was involved in our 1st postponed Boro game as a professional club

After 84 minutes away to Bradford City & losing 1-0 when fading light resulted in the ref calling the game off

In goal, Tim Williamson, our record appearence over 22 seasons & only keeper to score in a competitive match

The Carr brothers, Willie & John

George Elliot another one of our famous goalscoring legends

The match replayed on the 4th February 1913, Boro won 2-1

Ironically, if the 1995 Barnsley league game at AP hadn't been abandoned then our 1st & last abandoned games while playing at AP, would have been abandoned due to bad lighting, Bradford & Leicester in 1974

I nearly fell out of my chair when I looked at Jackie's Wikipedia entry. The photo could easily have been Saltburn and Redcar wicket keeper Bill Carr

Some of you may remember him as Bill Carr and others as Mr Carr as he was a teacher at West Dyke school in Redcar for many many years

Not a major surprise he was Jackie's son

The error is that it shows Jackie's position as centre half. He was always a winger Brother George was a defender, mind
