Jacinda Ardern - Resigns

After more reading it seems I was quick to judge.

Abortion still doesn't sit right with me, just personal preference. Obviously of the pregnancy is a result of rape or could kill the mother then it's fair.

I agree with the notion (often attributed to Hillary Clinton, though she's not the one who came up with it) that abortion should be rare, but safe and legal when necessary.

Well, as I doubt you take much notice of the day to day politics in New Zealand, what is it about her calm, intelligent, sensible responses to a terrorist attack, a volcano eruption and a global pandemic that you don't like?
I find her twee, sickly, smug and preachy, if I'm allowed an opinion NZedred.

Good point, but would you take that, and virtually no one dying of coronavirus, or the bombastic RARRRR RARRRRR WHIFFLE of Johnson and the deadliest country on earth

Some choice that; I'd like to think I had other alternatives. I'm no Boris Johnson fan, or defender.
I'm pretty certain St Jacinda would have had tens of thousand of deaths if she had these two islands rather than the two she has.

Why do you think that? It’s out of odds with any other island nation. Can’t you see our deadly incompetent response is the outlier?

I think NZ is very lucky to have her in these very difficult times.

What better time to have a PM who's humble, modest, compassionate and decisive in confronting social issues ?.

Exactly, we have the worst possible PM at the worst possible time. It stuns me that people like Indeed think she would have had the same number of deaths as the incompetent, bumbling, negligent, lying, useless, ineffectual, divisive, rotten, corrupt, lying PM that we have.

Which you knew fine well would be the case after you voted conservative?
One thing rings true about every politician in the world, they are only it for themselves.

So how do explain politicians like Tsai Ing-Wen and Jacinde Arden saving their people form coronavirus whilst Johnson has bumbled, prevaricated and downright lied and killed hundreds?

I understand your comments regarding Boris.

To be honest though SmallTown, Iv'e always found the English electorate, somewhat strange.

I happened to be in England when Thatcher was in power when several family members and friends had lost their livelihoods.
It was bewildering to me when I returned a few years later when Thatcher was re-elected to find those friends and family members
either hadn't bothered to vote or had actually voted for her due to England defeating the Argies over the Falklands.
To them it was almost like England had won the world cup and she deserved another term because of it. The ones that didn't bother
to vote were left scratching their heads, wondering how on earth did she get back in.

Very odd indeed. I was left scratching my head too. Didn't they realise by not casting a vote that they were actually handing
their vote to the one that they most despised?

Australia have had 109 deaths from coronavirus from a population of over 25 million.
NZ is a remote village by comparison 1000 miles away.
It is good that NZ have had no deaths, but not quite the incredible feat portrayed in support of St Jacinda.

NZ is the centre of nowhere, with a small Australian dependent economy and 6% of the population density of the UK. Rather easier to lock down there.

Don't confuse this with me supporting, or even defending Johnson and his crew.
Nor is it knocking NZ or its people.
Just get some perspective with Ardern, she hasn't got the toughest gig in the world.

These are all very good points. She has had to deal with terrorist attacks, volcanos, and an earthquake in her first time. On top of covid and maternity leave. Yes it's a lot easier to contain a virus in a remote, sparsely populated country but even taking this into account she's done a good job. She also acts like she cares about her citizens. It's painfully clear Johnson doesn't

Just a couple of quick things indeedido.

We have had deaths unfortunately. Not many I agree, but too many for us to be fair.

Secondly, unlike a few years ago, we are not an Australian dependent economy. If we were, we would have tanked by now. We have trade deals with the rest of the world, in fact along with Australia, South East Asia, China and the States are probably where the majority of our exports go now, although to be fair I haven't checked the stats for the last few months.

We are also slightly closer than 1000 miles, both culturally and geographically. We may be the centre of nowhere, or middle earth perhaps, but I would argue that no leader has had it easy in any country.

Finally, yes, physically it is probably easier to lock down here, but the mental problems associated with that are the same the world over.

We clearly agree re Johnson.
Earthquakes are part of life sadly in NZ - especially the tragic Christchurch; and one utter nutter acting alone in a mosque is hardly terrorist central (despicable as it undoubtedly was)
It is one thing looking good throwing borrowed money around during a pandemic and then actually having to finance that when you have publicly de-prioritised growth like she has.
Ardern's tests will be what she does when she really has problems and when the electorate is not distracted from the economy and actually remembers what she did rather than said.
