Izzy was offside

The linesman was definitely thinking about putting his flag up for a good couple of seconds after the goal was scored.

Looks close, but isn't the linesman supposed to give the attacker the benefit of the doubt unless it is obviously offside?
With this it was a very close call and could of really went either way especially without the ability to have a second look at it.

Doesn’t the ball have to go forward to be offside?
I thought that too, especially with this part of the offside rule:

  • any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent
If the ball is beyond them, then a sideways or backwards pass would have to be played and is therefore onside surely?

Thank god there was no VAR then. He looks off but then again on Saturday I was screaming for VAR after that tackle on OBrien that has put him out for months.

I was sat in line with it, the linesman seemed a few yards behind play. I felt it was 100% offside, in real time. There was definitely a moment the linesman was going to raise his flag. Even the ref kept looking over giving him more than one opportunity to change his mind.

Everyone sat around me in the east stand all thought it was off side and we were waiting for the flag to go up.

to be honest the lino on our side of the pitch was completely ducking useless and was usually well behind the run of play (not for the first time may I add)

when the ref looked over to him he just shrugged his shoulders like he didnt know.

With no var these things happen. If VAR was in play 100% the linesman flags as they are instructed to and let VAR look at it.

It's hard to say. The number 18 might be playing Jones onside.

It's a very close call, nobody could complain if the linesman got it wrong.

If the attacker is ahead of the ball (and the 2nd last defender) and his team mate passes the ball sideways or backwards, the attacker could move backwards to hit it. He would still be offside.

When we scored I didn't even go mad cause I was convinced it was offside, looks like we got away with another one.

Got a bit lucky with decisions so far this season.

That lino missed a fair number of ball-out situations. Even from the North Stand you could see clear daylight between the ball and the line. In the first half the ref also missed a foul on a Boro player because he wasn't looking at the action and needed to be bailed out by the other lino.

Crooks was about 3 yards offside at Blackburn.
Crooks was onside as there was a Blackburn player out of shot playing him on, it is the only plausible explanation:
