As Paul Merson said on Friday night, you can't have betting all over shirts, billboards, adverts popping up while games are on, following your favourite song on the radio and expect footballers not to fall foul of the rules.

I take your point. However our local garage sells beer. It wouldn't cut much ice if I filled the car up, got drunk on their beer and drove home drunk.

surely contracts cover this sort of thing nowadays. Daft if they don't. He earns over a million a year so it could hit him hard, though if he's got anything about him he'll have plenty in the bank.

He's daft - could easily have got one of his mates to set up accounts and do it for him.....which I'm sure plenty of players do.

Totally agree. Similar to the non stop ads with alcohol back in the 80s and 90s. We need to stop this nonsense with all things related to public consumption. I’d even ban fast food ads but I’m sure (some) people would say I’m a kill joy. Lol

They aren't banning him for betting but for betting on football, including (according to some reports) games he was involved in.
Rules are clearly designed to prevent footballers either benefitting from inside info' or colluding to bring about a certain event or result.
However I think 8 months is harsh given they were meant to be small amounts.

I find it odd. Football has just too many moving parts for easy bets to come off. If he lumped £10k on Brentford drawing with Spurs, then lumped an injury time penna over the bar with the score at 1-1.....yeah, get that.
But if it's just random bets on random teams.....

The bets occurred before he was at Brentford.
He made hundreds of them, and he'll definitely have known players at some of the clubs he's bet on.
Given you can bet on number of corners, throw-ins, cards, etc.
It wouldn't take much to fix.

He literally advertises betting every time he steps onto the field of play. I think this ban is ludicrous. If you’re banning this lad from playing football for 8 months then you have to ban gambling and gambling advertising from football as well, otherwise you just look stupid and hypocritical.

He's not banned because he's had a bet.
He's banned because he's repeatedly bet on a sport that he plays in, which prohibits any betting from those involved, and will likely have connections with players involved in the matches he'd bet on.
It would be very easy to fix matches if players were allowed to bet on them.
If he'd bet 1,000 times on rugby or horse racing, there'd had been no issue.

Yes I understand but the whole thing is a nonsense. I know why players can’t bet on games but I also think gambling advertising should be nowhere near it as well.
