It wouldn’t be match day without a Dan Barlaser thread

I'm starting to think should we consider selling him this summer. I reckon Rotherham would have him back there and I'd settle for us getting the money back that we'd spent on him.

I'm warming to O'Brien and I'd be happy for us to have Hackney, O'Brien, Howson and a new DM as our midfield options next season.
Exactly how I feel too.

Was just about to say this too.

He is a luxury we don’t need with a fully fit squad.

He won’t get a game next season if we buy right and keep the players that we need

Saying that Azaz and O’Brien are not the answer. Both go missing in games or don’t turn up at all
Azaz and LOB don’t afford the opposition opportunities like badpasser does though.

He’s only in there because of injuries, he’s had his chance and he’s not taken it. Too inconsistent and by that I mean, he literally gives the opposition the ball in terrible situations.

I think the lad gets some really unfair stocl, but he seems to be target no.1 currently.

Both he and O'Brien were average yesterday, but I also think that they've been asked to play a different game in the last 8 games(ish), which doesn't naturally suit either because they are both forward thinking players.

I'd like to see him at the base of a three, that would suit him more and overall I think he's done ok this season.

I'd love us to bring in Matt Grimes from Swansea btw.

Totally agree. Some fans are desperate for him to make a mistake so they can moan about him. My biggest concern is his tackling and being too nice but he did OK yesterday. Some nice passes. One in the first half with the outside of his foot was brilliant.

Azaz and Jones were worse yesterday but don’t see any posts about them.

Yes, it was a 'workmanlike' performance and Barlaser contributed more than some others.

I don't think his style helps because he can look a bit languid and like all players, more so at this level, has obvious strengths and weaknesses.

His range of passing is the best of all our midfielders, but he's not the most robust tackler I've ever seen!

Probably because they don’t set the opposition up for a clear chance at goal two or three times per match

Barlaser did it once yesterday and it was actually a poor ball to him in the first place. Fans are just obsessed by Barlaser. At least Barlaser put himself about yesterday and demanded the ball. Unlike Jones who actively ran away from the ball.

I think a lot of the criticism is harsh. Yes for me he's a squad player, but the squads been decimated with injuries so what do people want. He doesn't have the mobility to be the player receiving the ball from the keeper on the edge of the box and is never on the turn when he does. When Hackney or Howson are fit that's their job and Barlaser can then receive the ball higher up the pitch and links up much better when they are fit.

Yesterday he has to play that role as O'Brien can't do it and he's the better of the 2. Why can't people get their heads around that's how we play.

People have got their heads around how we play

That’s why the majority understand that Barlaser isn’t good enough for us

Will be sold in the summer

Well I've been hopeful he might improve this season so have stayed out of the gashness debate on him but a more pertinent thing now for a DM he is not picking up any yellows. He's got 2 in 2200min of footy as opposed to Hackney and Howson 6 & 7 in similar mins. I picked this up a few weeks ago and watched any play involving him on highlights and yeah he much prefers the 'run alongside' approach or a gentle stick out a leg when he has full balance. Non of the ball saving combative stuff we see from H&H. So obc can't vouch fro every min of his play but he seems to have taken a new mental approach of stay out of comabative tackles,, which is no good for us really , unless you putting ing goal and assist stats a plenty . Some of his vision and passing is great though and he may be the assister of the assists if you could metric that. But its not enough in itself .

He set them up three times

Barlaser doesn't hide and he is the best passer of the ball of our midfielders, but crucially only when he has time.
I feel for him because he is far from without ability, but it is sadly true that he is not fast enough in his movement and feet. Sadly he is also a poor tackler.
I think Carrick really wants him to come good and he has had lots of chances, but he is not good enough for a top half Championship side IMHO.
