It’s a sin

Anybody watched it yet ? Series about growing up gay in the 80s I believe, sounds like a good watch. Anyone seen it?

Watched the first two so far, absolutely brilliant.

Mrs Jumpers pointed out that the lead singer from Years and Years plays one of the main characters (passed me by) but I did notice that Dougie Howser MD plays another one of the characters.

I thought it was a good watch. I binged it over 2 days (if that's binging?).

It brought back plenty of memories growing up in the 80s. I was about 10 when the whole AIDs/HIV came on the scene. It was a pretty scary time with many predicting 'the end of times' as they didn't know anything about it.

I remember it being a 'joke' around schools saying 'you've got AIDs' etc. I was genuinely afraid of everything from sitting on a toilet seat to borrowing a pen (cheers parents) . They had adverts that put the fear of god into you.

Then when they found out how it was transmitted it made everyone paranoid about having sex or any close contact.

A real strange time to live through. I guess a bit like now.

I thought that was brilliantly shown through Jill and her actions with the cup

It was true. So much incorrect advice being spread. Thank god we didn't have the Internet as the lunatics would be denying it was 'a thing' like covid.

My parents would tell me not to touch or share anything. Fortunately sex wasn't an issue. I was more interested in Return of The Jedi toys😂

Binged the whole series yesterday.

I was at school in the 80s. I suspected I was gay when at school but reading all the bile in the papers about gay plague at the time made me terrified. Thankfully I was too young and missed it.

It was poignant and terrifying. So much of it resonated with me. I don’t think this is a spoiler but right at the end there was some dialogue about gay men dying because they would shag anything in sight and were constantly looking for sex and countless lovers because of deep rooted loveless distant parents. Then there was a conversation with a straight school friend who he obviously had a crush on. Found that painful to watch.

thank god we’ve moved on. But there are still times I wish I’d been born straight. Would have been so much easier.

Prejudice is violence.
I remember in April 1999 when Nazi David Copeland planted a nail bomb in The Admiral Duncan pub in Soho - [claims to be the oldest gay bar in London] - killing three people and injuring 70 others.

My mates dad sold Copeland the nails for it at his hardware store. He still beats himself up about it.

It's uncomfortable now watching re-runs of Only Fools And Horses seeing Del Boy joking about Aids and gay men.

I remember Copeland was born and raised in Hampshire - Yateley. He lived in London at the time he carried out three bombings.

From memory isn’t del feeling poorly and says to Rodney he thinks he might have got aids off his hairdresser?

I think the jokes on del’s ignorance tbf....

My mum was a social worker who pushed Cleveland Council into making her the 1st AIDS specialist in the area, so I grew up quite aware of the scale of it. I remember being gobsmacked by one of the regular gay visitors to the house telling me Rob Halford was gay.

It’s a shame your dad feels that way after all this time - he was just doing his job.

I remember this well as I had just moved to London, very scary times indeed.

We are up to episode three - the MRs is fascinated by it - she was reading up on it - in retrospect the experts believe that AIDS came into being in the 1920s , possibly in the Congo, in the thirties and forties following coloonisation she said there was a vaccination drive for other diseases and they suspect that the needles weren’t cleaned, added to that the increase in trade and travel through local ports led to the spread. I don’t know whether there is any truth in all that but it sounds potentially viable. I had no idea it’s origins were so long ago - I thought it came about in the 80s.
