Is our squad ACTUALLY as good as people think?

If we make the playoffs daydreamer will not make the changes fast enough & we will lose hole team will be sold off & we will be rebuilding again which will take 2 years.
Honestly are you ok

I can understand a reasoned complaint but taking every opportunity to criticise our manager on a daily basis is not good for your wellbeing.

Take a break and lets see what happens in the next game

Honestly you may feel better

No championship squad is perfect. Every team has players that are too good for them and others that aren't good enough. Our squad is good enough to be challenging for the autos but for a number of reasons it isn't happening.
Nail on the head.

I think we've got a squad more than capable of being around the play offs (best 3-6 teams in the league) but definitely not good enough to be considered one of the top two teams.

We have strength in certain areas, the problem is that we have had to play too many none first choice player playing too often, which exposes the squad.

Of the team that started against Blackburn how many get in our first choice XI - On current form I'd say two, Dijksteel and Burgzorg, and even then Burgzorg was playing up front and he's never a striker in a million years. Plus id hazard a guess that Carrick would pick Ayling over Dijksteel when fully fit.

I don`t believe that we have a squad that could get 2 ppg over the course of the season

I think we can manage 1.8 but currently are only achieving 1.57

There is room for improvement but that will come when we have our first choice back

To get to 2ppg at the end of the season we would need to win all but 3 of our remaining fixtures ( that isn`t happening, even with a full squad available)

We can achieve 1.8 though ( I honestly believe that ), which would mean winning 14 of the remaining 20. That would get us83 points, enough for a playoff place.

In the last 20 league games we have W9, D6, L5, so it`s not impossible to think we can be/get better

We are good enough for a playoff place but not an auto place

Lots of debate surrounding where people think we should be, Carrick's performance etc. but I think we have gaps in the playing squad that stop us from pushing on from playoff contenders to promotion contenders. I will caveat that by saying that I think we're working towards that position and it seems like we are getting more right off the pitch over the last couple of years compared with the years beforehand.

Dieng - last season was excellent but this season has been average for his potential ability. Looking increasingly likely that he is off anyway so we need to sign a number 1 goalkeeper. (SELL)

Brynn - impressed when he's played. Good standard for a number 2 and hopefully only going to improve so in a good position to push the number 1. (KEEP)

Glover - done ok the last few games and probably good enough to be a third choice despite his limitations so long as he's happy with that role. (KEEP)

Ayling - been really good at times and provides experience and leadership. Question marks over shelf life (KEEP)

Dijksteel - one of the success stories of the season, a player I really like but does have the odd clanger in him and is far from perfect so question marks about him being first choice (KEEP - new contract)

Smith - was brilliant until injury but due to age and nature of the injury I fear that his time is up (RELEASE)

Bangura - potentially superb and the only one of the left backs that looks capable of functioning in the same way Giles did which allows our left midfielder to invert but he's missed so many games since he signed that he looks like a total crock (KEEP and hope for the best)

Engel - really likeable and I think most fans hope that things work out for him, puts in some good games but also some shockers and looks like Championship might be a step too far for him to be consistent for a team at the top (SELL)

Borges - jury is still out with him. Looks to be better when inverting rather than providing width so his success could depend on us signing a left sided Doak kind of player (KEEP)

McCormick - looks promising from his brief appearances but there's always a lot of uncertainty around young players stepping up (KEEP)

Lenihan - looked the part last season but, as with Smith, is he going to be able to recover from this injury? He's contracted until the end of next season and I doubt we'd find a buyer given how long he has been out (KEEP - only because selling might be difficult)

Clarke - a couple of months ago he was in fine form and looked like our best defender but things seemed to have soured since then and yesterday he didn't look bothered at all. Rumours that he's not happy and wants out (SELL)

Fry - prone to criticism at times, sometimes unfairly, a good quality player for this level (KEEP)

Van Den Berg - quality player and destined for bigger and better things, has the odd mistake or poor game but is still a young kid so hardly surprising (KEEP - for as long as we can)

Edmundson - he's ok, apart from yesterday when he kept twatting simple passes out for a throw in. Bog standard Championship centre half but not our player anyway and not really done enough to warrant making the move permanent (LOAN ELAPSES)

Howson - been a brilliant player for us and still capable of putting a performance in but he can't go on forever and has been injured when we've desperately needed cover for Morris (RELEASE)

Hackney - has been on the end of a lot of criticism this season despite him having to carry the whole of the middle of the park himself. Top quality player at this level and another who we'll struggle to keep hold of (KEEP - as long as we can)

Morris - took to this league instantly and has been missed more than anyone else while he's been injured. Top quality player. (KEEP)

McCabe - looks promising and very much in the Hackney mould, would do as good a job as Barlaser as backup from what I've seen (KEEP)

Barlaser - the boo boy. Hasn't impressed when he's played, mainly due to the imbalance in the midfield pairing. Could well be a decent enough back up to Hackney but with McCabe coming through it makes more sense to use his squad space for a different kind of midfielder (SELL)

Azaz - our main creator and his goal/assist stats are best in the league. Had a quiet month compared to the previous ones but still a great player (KEEP)

Gilbert - seems to impress when coming off the bench but then not as effective when starting. Still looks like there's a player in there though. Back up to Azaz (KEEP)

McGree - on his day he's our best player, not had his day for what seems like a while (since QPR away). As fans we don't get the inside info into what may or may not be going on with him so questions about his fitness and mentality surface. Needs an adventurous left back to compliment him. (KEEP)

Burgzorg - a bit of an enigma. Has the pace and physicality to be an asset but seems to be under the required standard to nail down a place as a key player. Better than I first thought he was because at the start of the season he looked absolutely atrocious. Could be handy as backup or impact player (KEEP)

Doak - absolute superstar and we look a bit lost without him. Sadly he's not our player so will be leaving at the end of the season, if not sooner. (LOAN ELAPSES)

Hamilton - I don't know what he is. Doesn't look good on the left, doesn't look good on the right. Yesterday he took up some good positions but then did absolutely nothing with the ball. Doesn't look like he can beat a man when he has him stood up 1 on 1 (LOAN OUT)

Forss - definitely has the required quality but seems to be made of glass which is a real shame as he's popular with the fans for good reason. I'd give him another season and if it's the same pattern as this year then let his contract come to an end (KEEP - for one more season)

Latte Lath - I love him, he's class and not just for his goals but for his work-rate off the ball as well. I think we all know that he'll be gone soon, most likely within the next 19 days (SELL)

Conway - really good player at this level, good numbers and potential to develop further. (KEEP)

So from that list of 29 players there's quite a few who haven't performed to the required level to push us on towards being a top 2 team and if I was Carrick/Scott I'd be looking to replace (or having to replace) 10 players.

New keeper
Right back
Left back
2 x centre back
backup defensive midfielder
right winger (potentially 2)
left winger
centre forward

All that without someone coming in and nicking Hackney, VDB or Azaz.
How can it be a good squad when Barlaser plays every week? He's awful at almost everything a footballer is meant to do.

Man for man are sunderland better? Not a chance but they're pragmatic and hard to beat. I hate saying it but I'm leaning towards the manager being the problem
They have lots of exciting young players, we haven't,other than one owned by Liverpool, and he's got 1 man to aim at in the middle

We have a very good squad, unfortunately we've had to use the 'squad' far to often. We have Dan Barlaser playing regularly, Dijksteel who we all previously thought would have been out of the club by this window, a constantly changing defence (wonder what the stats are on who's played with who most) and are currently playing with a 3rd choice keeper. All of that and we're in 5th, therefore it's got to be a good squad. Injury hit teams don't tend to go up though, we desperately need those key players fit and get a settled team.

It's decent but I'm sure there will be 5 or 6 as good and 2 or 3 that are better.
I don't think our management team is able to coach them to defend properly. Man management appears good. Just don't defend as a team. No amount of left backs will fix this.

We had what looked like a decent, well balanced squad at the end of the summer window. If we dont get into the play offs, with the squad we had then I see it as a failure. Carrick has said we need to come out of this window stronger and if he believes we will then I expect us to cement our place in the play offs in the coming months. It will need to be some window for us though if we lose ELL, Jones and Doak. Existing players need to step up though. My assessment of the squad was presuming the players would maintain their form from previous seasons. Mcgree, Hackney, insert name of any of the 4 centre backs, Ayling and Dieng have been shadows of their previous selves. Add that to the comical dropped points v Derby, Sheffield Wed, Plymouth, Cardiff ( I could go on) and I understand the negativity now. We should be closer to the automatics than we are and fine tuning the squad. Instead it looks like major surgery at the top of the pitch, which is a major gamble and hoping the calamity crew at the back get their act together. We never make things straightforward, do we.

I think we have a squad (January dealings dependent) that’s good enough for Top 6.

I’m seeing a lot of comments saying Carrick has got one of the best squads we’ve had in years. And to a point, I agree but it doesn’t make the squad top 2 material.

I don’t think this squad is on par with the AK squads in the play off / Promotion seasons.

On our day and when we are on it, I don’t think there are many better footballing sides in the league. But we are inconsistent and make too many mistakes. We have made the most mistakes that have led to a goal in the Division this year. Some of the errors have been things that are completely out of Carrick’s hands.

I think the relegated sides have outperformed my expectations this season. Thought Sheff Utd might struggle and hoped Burnley wouldn’t be as consistent as they have been. Add Leeds into the mix and top 2 looks very challenging given our inconsistency.

Sunderland have done very well, but they beat the sides they should beat (mainly). Our downfall has been dropped points against the Cannon Fodder.

We are in and around where I expected us to be this season though, but there has been potential to be even further up the league when looking at some of the points we’ve dropped.

This is why I believe we’ve got to stick with the manager and calling for his head when 5th in the table is very premature. We’re all frustrated with the home form but looking at the bigger picture on and off pitch, we’ve made progress vs. last season. In the main, players are improving under Carrick and the big PL clubs seem to be happy loaning us their better younger players with potential.

Play offs are the minimum expectation this year. What comes of that we have to wait and see. Not getting promoted this year could put us back another season as we’ll likely lost 2-3 of our best players and some players still need shipping out, which could mean a big rebuild next season, but financially we may be able to add significant improvements. It’ll then just hinge on getting those new additions to gel as quick as possible and not giving the rest of the league a head start!

That's a really good point - regardless of how good our squad is this season versus previous, the actual comparison is with the other 23 squads in the league!

Only as good as the last game because the following game we are never the same total inconsistency has been Carrick from day one.

I think 75 will be good enough for 5th/6th this season. So we need 34 points from 20 games. 10 wins, 4 draws, 6 defeats.

Have the players lost faith in Carrick as so many of them are downing tools & want out ie jones gone & Dieng refusing to play anymore for us there is something going on we are not aware of in the club.
