Is a world war looming

Could it be that the sheer lunacy....mistrust of the other side....arrogance and power squabbles...could...just could leave us creeping stealthily into a world war.
The recalcitrant nature of putin is becoming.a serious worry....
Hes invading almost piece by piece..before we know it he's banging on the door of East Western Europe....seeking assurances etc...
I do not feel as confident as I did that this will blow over...
Time to stock up on bully beef one thinks ?
Regardless we still need to tear the baggies a new one tonight

Most of us think this powerplay by Putin will be over in a jiffy. US do what they normally do -- play the [we'll hit them hard] schemes before taking off into some other land-- oh look they already relocated to Poland-- how convenient.

Putin announced he'd be moving troops in as "peacekeepers" on Russian TV so it wouldn't be a surprise. According to Putin he's only moving in troops because the Ukrainians have been shelling the Donbas. Whatever the truth of that I assume he'll say the leaders in the respective regions have requested assistance.

These days you can read the bull**** from both sides and judge for yourself.

Russia spends slightly more than the UK on its military. The USA spends 11 times Russia's spending on military.

To get an idea of the cost of modern warfare, the US Naval Strike Missile costs US $2,194,000 each. They bought 15 last year. Hellfire missiles cost between $45,000 and $213,000 each depending on the configuration. Rounds for the 57mm naval gun cost $1200 each. War is an expensive business. Imagine the profits. Imagine the corruption.

This is not about America or the West making money.

The corruption that you usually champion.

No it is not at the world war stage. I personally think Ukraine might fall cheaply and not be the bloody conflict many expect though, as once Kiev is taken and the president flees (they normally do, having transferred some wealth to a foreign bank), their appetite will quickly wain and Russia take over fully and be the next Belarus.

The risk to WW3 will be whether Putin is satisfied or has a taste for blood. That depends on how the west, and in particular countries like Germany and France react. A strong west might just might cause Putin to stick with things there, any weakness and fracture in Nato, Putin will exploit and if he thinks he can get back the 3 baltic states it is that that will trigger WW3 imho, although Moldova will be the one that likely comes next.

Agree with most of that.

I think Putin’s actions will have a binding effect on NATO.

They will know the importance of getting this right.

The thing is, and Putin knows this, is that the consequence of a World War, in this day and age where everyone has nukes, is just too big. If this was a small country then they would be dealt with but there's nothing really wet can do. Any reaction, other than "sanctions" which do nothing more than temporarily irritate Russia will start something that might be difficult to stop, especially if China backs Russia.

Russia will get what they want, which is the reintegration of the former Soviet States. The rest of the world will tut and it'll become the new normal. No different to when they took Crimea. China will follow suit and "reclaim" their territories like Taiwan because they know there will be no effective response.

It's an impasse, mutually assured destruction means nobody can stop them. While they couldn't take something like Alaska that belongs to another superpower they can do what they want to anyone unaffiliated.

There's been enough literature written on hegemonic powers, whether that is individual countries like the US or organisations like NATO then it isn't unrealistic for everyone to be forced to pick a side.

Just read the the size of the Russian economy is only half that of the UK. Surprised me. Its no longer the super power we are sometimes led to believe.
A sanctions war will hurt them very much. Lets hope everyone sees sense

Devil's advocate (or naive) but maybe they will keep the peace. If you lived there, you might prefer the army to the thugs and mercenaries they've had to put up with for the last few years.

This is not about America or the West making money.
It's what it all boils down to at the end of the day. Private military contracts, arms dealing, propping up governments and the such.

Plus anybody thinking Russia is no longer a superpower is kidding themselves. If this was a middle Eastern country instead of Russia invading another country the yanks would have shock and awe'd them by now.

Sadly this is how all wars start and this does have all the hallmarks of those conflicts.

Remember that it was one shot in a street in Sarajevo that led the world on the path that started the Great War.
