Interesting thread re Carrick on the Mackem's board

Think you have to look past just results. I'm sure even Sunderland fans would be more tolerant with different managers depending on the situation. I don't think he's perfect, nobody is, but he's as good as anyone available and I think he will get better as he gets more experience. We were brilliant last season so that built up a lot of credit. We play good football so a defeat is easier to take when it looks like you've actually tried to have a go, it's not just about results. The terrible run at the start of this season was because of recruitment, not Carrick. We sold all his best players and gave him a load of projects to develop. Then we've been inconsistent mainly due to injuries (but our squad is also nowhere near as talented as it was last year).

Wilder had a similar, albeit less spectacular, first season as Carrick with the cup performances replacing the stellar league form under Carrick but he wasn't given the time in the following season and that was mostly because Wilder wasn't particularly likeable (squad, fans and board weren't happy with him). If you swapped the results around then Carrick probably wouldn't have got sacked when Wilder did and Wilder would have been sacked when Carrick wasn't.

I've got to agree with SAFC Marc and what he's posted and that it is going to be a dog fight between eight teams for the remaining two play off places. I do feel we will struggle if we don't start putting consistency into our performances. We cannot be dropping points to the bottom clubs.

They had a rotten start to the season didn’t they? Fans would’ve wanted him out, for certain.
They did the same 2 seasons running now. Handicapped themselves with a horrific start.

17 points from their first 17 games last season, and were 21st. Then proceeded to win 12 of their next 16.

Last season their bad start cost them a real crack at automatic promotion, this year it could cost them playoffs.

Realistically there are 2 playoff places to play for and probably 8-9 teams* fancying they could get on. Anyone from Cardiff upwards should fancy their chances if they can put a good run of form together.

*I include us in that 8-9 even though I'm confident we won't do it

Sunderland fans are VERY fickle. They are already calling for Beale to go. They would have been wanting him sacked this season for sure after the start we had, and I think the Board would have done it.

If carrick gets us in the playoffs again and we lose out again and its similiar next season its looking like a stan anderson situation. Nice chap, good football played but a nearly man that cant quite do it. It took jack charlton to mould them into a promotion team.

No, Carrick is the real deal, though very much in his apprenticeship managerially speaking.

I HATE, overplaying, at the back there is zero win from this imho we & almost all teams need to be more pragmatic & look to PASS the ball, forward, with more urgency & something MC needs to grasp - hopefully our Chelsea routing will have slapped it into him: stop shooting ourselves in the foot.

Hopefully majority of our fans will see he's quality & will continue to back the team & him.

The Mackems on that board are a bunch of looney tunes. In total denial about what level their club is at. They wouldn’t think long term in relation to Carrick.

Most sensible Boro fans can see the what is trying to be achieved and understand Carrick has handled two situations out his control very well - development player recruitment and a huge injury list. Not once has he complained. This season we’ve struggled for consistency but there’s mitigation for that.

The thing with the Beale out stuff is pretty straight forward.. they thought they were hotshots and they could just toss Tony Mowbray in the bin as the didn't rate him.. fact is that he he a very talented manager and they have dropped a huge clanger.. Beale is not in the same league.. then there's Dodds the younger guy who was seen as one of their own.. better pill to swallow with a younger manager who they can lay a claim to.. gives them a bit more patience.

The rest.. Will Still is embarrassed at the mere association with Sunderland.. so he's a non starter.. Steve Copper probably out of their league and there are still fans umming and ahhing over him! Beale out will continue.. last week of the transfer window and they have some HIGH HOPES.. the reality is that they will more than likely lose some of their better players to bigger clubs and have to replace with a few wonky guffers on loan.

Boro vs Sunderland is going to be very interesting as it's not a derby of any kind and I get the feeling that the mackems want to lose the game to get Beale out.. they proper hate him!

They are the new Newcastle

If you watch the successful teams do it, including us at time, then it works because the opposition press forwards and it stretches the game which creates space for attacks. You just have to get through the press and then you have a numerical advantage. That's obviously a lot harder to do against Chelsea than it is against championship teams. Making a mistake and giving away a goal always looks bad but if you score more goals because of it than you concede then it's worth doing.

I understand that sentiment but you can only play to the game situation and what’s in front of you.

Not many teams have came to The Riverside this season and pressed us or pushed forward, giving us the space and opportunity to play those quicker passes forward.

If teams sit back in their own half, you have to try and sucker them out. Unfortunately, this season we’ve been nowhere near as clinical in front of goal as last season. Early goals are key in those situations. That’s not been helped by missing large chunks of the squad, especially senior players up top.

I don’t think Carrick is intentionally telling the players to not pass the ball forward quickly if there’s an opportunity.

We actually do it a lot more with Jones in the side who is one of the few players we have who can get in behind with his pace.

Our away record this season has been pretty good, but that’s because home teams tend to be on the front foot. We seem to be pretty good at picking them off and exploiting the space.

We don’t always get that luxury at home. McGree has been a huge miss for us. He’s the one player that can score and unlock a defence with movement and a killer final ball.

I do think we we will a lot better with returning players currently around 13 not available for some games.

I have known so many players missing it usually 4 or 5 mid season.
Who will be the players that make the difference?

McGree.. we've missed him MASSIVELY
Silvera - he was starting to cook.. I think we will be plesently surprised
Latte Lath - jeepers.. massively under appreciated
Dieng - Glover has stepped up.. but Dieng will be fighting for his place back
Jones - i've heard he's out for 8 weeks.. hopefully it's twitter guff.. a huge miss last night

Lenihan.. out for the season but Clarke has stepped in
Smith.. again out for the season.. but Ayling has stepped in

Coburn - a solid 1in3 striker..causes problems and gets better and better
Forss - like a new signing doing really well.. hopefully we can keep him fit
O'Brien - back in the fold.. a great option to have.. Barlaser has his feet under the table.. but how long for?
Greenwood - I like Greenwood.. talented and a bit chewey.. expiring good things
Azaz - did the biz for plymouth.. MRs replacement.. maybe

ANOTHER STRIKER - k'now.. the foreign guy with 17 goal to his name already.. apparently

MCGREE, JONES, FORSS.. AND ONE OTHER

gotta get some more goals into the mix or our pudding is gonna be flat

Engel's goal at Millwall was a brilliant example of it working well. You have to take the risks to make it work and occasionally you get caught out and it looks awful. But as a philosphy it is definitely the right way to play. The problem we have had at home is with teams like Rotherham who have absolutely zero intention of pressing. So even tho we are knocking it around at the back you aren't going to draw anyone out. That was evident when they got a break away at one point and the guy shot from 70yds!!! Don't think he dare venture into our half.

That said I thought last night was naive and suicidal. It's one thing trying to do it with the likes of Clarke and Fry in the Championship. A completely different scenario last night and we should have had a plan B. That said I love Carrick and wouldn't change him for anyone at the moment

Hopefully Carrick will have noted how Pochettino broke through our defence at will last night and learns from it.
