Infantino threatens europe over TV rights for women world cup

Trying to balckmail the BBC, as he has no chance of cohersion over commercial TV

"In calling for improved offers, Infantino said all TV revenue for the tournament would be reinvested in women's football and that public broadcasters in particular, such as the BBC, have a "duty to promote and invest in women's sport".

KO Times for Europe are very poor - as has been said too early & weekday games mostly unwatchable due to work / school commitments - advertising opportunity around those games, in Europe, would be poor compared to later kick offs..

If FIFA want Europe to foot the big money then that is where the KO times should be scheduled - however USA & China are the global market FIFA want to crack & they should stump up the money. European broadcasters should stick to their bids & maybe offer just to stream via online platforms if FIFA kick off & tell FIFA to find other European broadcasters to grow the game..

GI is, IMHO, completely unfit to govern FIFA.. ( nice that EA Sports have just dropped them - another financial hit in the pocket )

Infantino is a genius. His every move is about extracting the maximum amount of money from any given situation. If he saw a man dying of thirst and unable to move, with a glass of water just put of reach, his thoughts would entirely be how can I extract the maximum amount of money from this situation, rather than give this man some water.

But the genius of this fella is the spin he puts on it.

In one fell swoop he turns grasping around for every last penny into a noble act. He does it over and over and over again.

If the bloke was caught staring at a woman's t*ts he would turn it around into some bull**** about body positivity.

I’d like to know if FIFA are compensating women’s club teams with the same amount of money that the men’s teams receive while their players are on international duty.

I suspect not. And if they’re not then he really isn’t in a position to preach.

A commercial company offers what it sees as a fair price. FIFA decide it’s not enough so decide to impose a blackout of games in the company.

Therefore next generation, people on board from success at European championships is lost. How is this approach growing the game. Sounds counter intuitive to me.

More like growing the revenue

Unless Ive missed something, I don't understand the outrage? Surely this is the right thing to do for women's football?

I think the game needs exposure if it is to grow, not payments to FIFA.
I suppose your position is that the payment to FIFA would be ploughed back into the womens' game, which I think is a reasonable point, but I'd think the exposure is more imortant at this point. Plus, there's always the possibility the cash would vanish into some FIFA back pockets.

The viewing figures will be poor, especially with the likely kick off times, so it’s not surprising they aren’t offering big numbers for the games. While the quality isn’t great I didn’t mind watching England in the women’s euros as it was on at decent times, though i didn’t watch any games that didn’t involve England. No way I’d have any interest in any of the games being broadcast at that time. I expect many others will be thinking like me.
Englands games all kick off in reasonable times at 9.30 and 10.30 in the morning, one a Saturday morning.

I suspect FIFA are thinking about their own streaming service and pushing subscribers on to that platform. Not sure the sponsors will be that impressed.

Market forces at play. The broadcasters should call Infantino's bluff and refuse to up up their offer and see if he goes through with his threat and upset the sponsors. Women's football is popular but not anywhere near as equal to the men's World Cup and FIFA have to realise that at some point.
I wouldn't think the sponsors would be too happy if they lost a huge part of their targeted market and could ask to be compensated for this. It could bite him on the backside.

Infantio is showing his true colours once again, we have seen him turn a blind eye to what was going on with the workers in Qatar, he is increasing the number of participants at the next world cup to garnish more money and now he is trying to blackmail TV broadcasters at the eleventh hour for more money.

I would like to see the broadcasters grow a pair and tell FIFA they are not covering the games. It is tough on the fans but there is a time you need to make a stance.

I can see the BBC paying up. They're priced out of too much sport so if they think they can afford the extra they'll pay. I hope they don't though.

To be fair regarding his sponsors he tried to sell it all to Saudi last month.

Sounds like FIFA are playing a silly and dangerous game with the popularity and future of the Women's game at stake. FIFA have too much power and don't have to answer to anyone apart from the odd big sponsor (many of whom they have already upset in recent years).

Power corrupts and FIFA are clearly still a very odd self-serving organisation.

Kick off times look to be to suit the local football fans, which is how it should be.

They're better for the European countries than American countries, and particularly good for us oldies. They're certainly not kicking off to suit the American market
