Wasnt it Churchill who said that?William Gladstone - Infant Hercules
Gladstone (Prime Minister) - “This remarkable place, the youngest child of England’s enterprise, is an infant, but if an infant, an infant Hercules,”
The motto Erimus ("We shall be" in Latin) was adopted, it reflects Fuimus ("We have been") of the Bruce Clan which were Clevelands mediaeval lords.
Yep the same family. The blue lion on the town's coat of arms (see my avatar) is taken directly from the Bruce family coat of arms.Wasn't the Bruce that owned Cleveland related to Robert, the 'trier with the spider'? I like the idea of that.
The Erimus motto also alludes to the saying "Yarm was, Stockton is, Middlesbrough shall be", as in being the major port on the TeesGladstone (Prime Minister) - “This remarkable place, the youngest child of England’s enterprise, is an infant, but if an infant, an infant Hercules,”

That’s the one I heard too. Do we know who is thought to have said that? The Erimus motto also alludes to the saying "Yarm was, Stockton is, Middlesbrough shall be", as in being the major port on the Tees
Yes it was Joseph Pease who said that brilliant line. That’s the one I heard too. Do we know who is thought to have said that?
The other choice wasI voted for Erimus to be the stadium name when they had the vote at the end of Ayresome. Much more in keeping with the club than the anodyne Riverside, I thought. Anyone remember what the third option was because I don't?
I suppose Cellnet Erimus wouldn't have worked though.
