Identifying an insect

The last few days has seen the appearance of this little critter below in a spare room in the house and he’s barely moved in that time.

Any idea what type of insect it is? It’s similar ish to a crane fly, but it’s smaller, black and has wings like the Angel of the North!

Any suggestions as to what it may be?

Wee Gord it looks like you’re getting like me . Tons of spare time on my hands 😬
the things I’ve been investigating lately !

Thank you @kmorrisuk that looks like a handy app to have! Just Googled the species and according to Wiki (I know, I know) it's distribution is basically North America. This one must have been lost as I don't think they live in the UK, no wonder he isn't moving much... must need a rest after that flight ;)

Its a very handy app, worth a download. I use it a bit when I am out walking with my camera

Jeez! You don’t want one of them In your house they’re deadly and breed like wildfire. If you’ve got one you’ve probably got an infestation and the only solution is to burn down your house and then flood the remains. Doubt insurance will cover it either. Sorry.
