Ian Wright's abusive attacker Patrick O'Brien

I have just read this article on the BBC and feel that Ian Wright's got a point. When are our judges going to start getting tough on mindless idiots who choose to call people because of the colour of their skin. Why should anyone feel the need to attack another because they lost a FIFA computer game.

As a teenager, I would regular get into scrapes for people calling my family black this and black that and fully appreciate Ian Wright's comment stating 'I'm tired, we are all tired.' The majority of fine up standing people in this country are tired of this abuse and it needs to stop. Using the excuse of being a naive young man doesn't wash with me.

Whilst we are willing to deal with people in this lenient fashion, racism will never go way.

The naivety excuse is bollox.

Unless you've been living in a cave for the last 50 years or so I don't see how anyone can claim they don't fully understand what they're doing when giving racist abuse.

Pretty sure the fact it is so offensive is part of the appeal for some of these idiots.

I remember he shared the abuse he received on Twitter, absolutely horrendous. Totally shocking that the lad in question is off the hook.
It beggars belief, what was the judge thinking.

I understand he wrote a written apology and donated 500 euros towards racism, but for him to only receive a slap on the wrist is beyond belief for me.

Youngsters would have even less of an excuse than people of our parents generation. It’s (supposedly) not tolerated these days and they won’t here it at school or in the workplace so maybe there’s a case for charging the parents as that is likely where they learn it from.

the internet developed so quickly we forgot the checks and balances - it’s as if in some people’s minds that it’s not real it’s just virtual. It’s similar to gambling on there - it’s just like a number on the screen and not real money.

we all do it to a degree on here - I bet we are all much nicer, better characters than we come across on here. However there’s one thing being a bit lairy and another breaking the law. These people abusing Ian Wright etc need to realise that there actions online carry equal weight as if they abused him in the street and will be punished accordingly

I think some of these kids sat in their bedroom think ahh they’ll never catch me it’s just the internet I’ll just say I was hacked or it wasn’t me or such like.

maybe the internet companies could help by making clear warnings etc but ultimately you alone are responsible for your actions online or otherwise.

Yeah, I've said many a time the technology has outpaced legislation. I think this board is very good compared to other sites. We're a good crowd in the main, the vast vast majority are respectful, even when they disagree.

Yes agreed we are but like I say even some of us act as we wouldn’t outside.

That's probably true. Nature of the beast (i.e. The internet) etc. But don't think many are too far off. The trick is maybe to wait before posting when annoyed!

Racism is still about in lots of areas
As an exanple it's surprising to me how many 55 plus year old women make comments full of bile and hatred towards asylum seekers etc on Teesside news articles on social media
The comments get lots of 'likes' and are rarely taken down
Are the comments towards Ian Wright etc what these posters really think?

Racism has no place in this world. We are all equal, or should be equal.

My extended family have suffered vast amounts of racism in their lives but it's worse today with the amount of social media trolls hiding behind VPN's.
