Ian St John RIP

Fantastic player and a big part of why Liverpool are where they are today- an icon. Like many on here, I loved the Saint and Greavsie. I remember splitting my sides when Jimmy Greaves was threatening (and actually did) something unmentionable to a puppet of that odious sports minister during Thatcher's time, where the Saint was incredulous and then just couldn't stop laughing.

He was well loved and respected for sure.
Another recognisable and outstanding player of my early childhood gone....

I have a write up in one of my scrapbooks about St John been suitable replacement for a Boro player, not sure what season we're talking about, been checking but no luck so far

I remember reading he was courted a bit by Newcastle before he signed for Liverpool, but Shankly got in there before he could sign :) I'm guessing it must have been early 70's if he was linked with us??

Sure it was, I'm not too sure if we were actually linked or was it a local journalist saying as St John wasn't getting a game at present could we put in a cheeky offer

I'll continue to look & post it when I find it

Shankly signing Ian St John was only his 2nd choice for a new striker - he was going to sign 1st choice Jim Irvine from Dundee Utd but he got injured, and 'Big Jim' was subsequently signed by Boro....

Dont know that cheers kuepper

3 seasons at the Boro, 100 games, one as sub & 43 goals

Great footballer, TV pundit and all round personality.

Saint and Greavsie was copied by a few programmes, but never equaled. My mum and dad (he never liked football) use to settle down and watch it.

RIP.
