I know how good the Group is

Do you remember how you and Ray used to go about Brad Jones on the old board? It was way beyond constructive criticism.

Things aren't good right now but nearly every thread is doom-mongering.
I remember how poor he was yes. I was very critical of him on crosses, handling and command of his area, However I was appalled at hearing somewhere some fans were throwing coins and other missiles at him against QPR once, they were pathetic. I also praised players and managers too, I stuck up for Southgate, Karanka, the treatment he got was uncalled for. I was disgusted with fans at Stoke in March 2017, anyone hurling abuse like that was sick, when people on this board were going for Jugulars long before his sacking. I pointed out Southgate was to some degree hung out to dry and would go on to manage England. I criticised lots since 2006, I also praised lots too, that is what a board is for yet you bring up Jones, a quick look at his game time and loan moves tells me I wasn’t alone, it was only around 2016 he started to get regular game time.

Am on board with - you don’t criticise players individually or collectively.
Press conferences are obviously a pain and Carrick has to be careful with his responses.
Always best IMO to get the right balance of optimism but recognition that at the moment performances aren’t good enough.

Just wondering what ‘honesty’ sounds like at the moment…
Is it something like…

’It’s my job to get the best out of the players and clearly we are not there yet. I’m confident we will get better and I’m looking for improvement in every game’

I think it’s unreasonable to expect Carrick to do anything else. The confidence within the team is fragile / non existent at present. That also adds a fundamental problem as you can have the best 11 in the league but without confidence, you’ll still struggle.

We’ve had 2 managers prior to Carrick who would often publicly criticise the squad and individuals. A lot of people didn’t agree with that approach.

We’ve now got a manager who takes the opposite approach and looks to protect his players. You can’t have it both ways.

One of Carrick’s qualities last season that people kept raising was his man management of players. He’d often leave the pitch with his arm round a player, chatting to them etc. especially if they’d had a poor game (Jones an example).

You can’t expect to abandon his principles on the back of a poor start to the season. I’m sure behind closed doors things are a different.

I don’t bother with the pressers anymore. The questions are generally pretty crap, where the answer is obvious.

“Michael, disappointing not to win on Tuesday. Hoping for 3 points on Saturday?”

“Not really, no. I quite enjoy averaging 0.3 points a game”

The one criticism I do have of Carrick is Square Pegs in round holes approach to selection. Injuries can’t be helped but we are still nowhere near knowing our best side. The constant chopping and changing and players being played out of position is now starting to frustrate the life out of me.

You can pretty much fill in for managers (and players) at these press conferences...As soon as the question is asked you pretty much know the reply. That's why I don't bother watching them anymore.
some of the replies are an insult to your intelligence.. Carrick says he knows the group ..I don't personally know the group but I know what I see and at the moment it's absolute dogs hite...
some of Carricks team sheets and substitutions are at time baffling to say the least, maybe he's looking for that magic formula, well I don't think Merlin the magician could get much more from this squad...

How come the group keep making the same mistakes. Or how come there’s been no improvement over 7 games. Even in defeat, I can see in parts we are positive, sorry Michael but the fans are failing to see what you mean.
No improvement in 7 games is the crucial part here.
I expect Coburn to be selected today and hope he knocks an early goal in.

Colburn done well today, held the ball up well, my only critique would be, we need someone to feed off him. Crooks isn’t the answer for me
