I didn't realise that Ryan Shotton

I would have him back, but, if you sign a player who has been used to being paid a lot more for the same job, how motivated will they be? This is going to apply in many situations in the EFL.

I would prefer to move on, he was to blame for lots of goals in my opinion, especially at CB. I thought his better performances were at RWB where he could do less damage. i hope he gets a club though and wish him well

Why the animosity? Like anyone else, he'll be aware of his market value, he'll know what he's going to ask for and will be primed and ready for any discussion and negotiation if the right employment opportunity comes his way.

Yes, he's one of the lucky ones.

I'd have him back.

To be fair it’s only Roofie displaying any kind of animosity on this thread.

I'd have him back. I think the issue was always his wages and as stated its not his fault. He's vastly experienced and can play as a CB and a better defensive RB than we have.

You certainly wouldn't say he stole a living (like Rudy). He was a pretty consistant performer and I imagine a safer bet than some 19yr old prem academy CB.

I didn't read anywhere that we had even offered a new deal. So maybe just wanted shot (😂). You read how reduced Ayala's and George's contacts were and you can see the size of the paycuts.

Then again getting 10k a week for another season is better than sitting at home. Ok it's not 20-30k but better than a kick in the d*ck. Unless he's just not that fussed and taking a few months off (I would).

Not at all.
Ive said Ide have him back if you check.
My point is that ordinary people are in a far worse boat than a footballer out of a job.
Its ok being privileged in your teens, twenties and early thirties, but the reallity for most is we dont have the luxury that a lot of footballers like Shotton has had.
Thats not animosity Tas, its pointing out a pertinent fact(y)

I do think some players are paid too much and it is ruining the game but there are those that earn much, much more and their money is literally squeezed from the poor. Id like to see people reserve their anger that seems to be vented on high earning footballers and turn it on those that REALLY bring the rest of us down.
there is a lot of money grabbing - even now there are those being awarded government contracts for COVID related services without any competing bids. what footballers earn pales into insignificance compared to these types of tw.at

To be fair Roofie, he hasn't been whining in the press about not having a job, so why are people getting on his back? we would all happily accept 25k a week off our employer if they were daft enough to offer it, so good luck to him.
It was the point about being out of a job raised by the original poster I was responding to.
Im not interested if hes been whinging in the press or not.
How many people do we all know whose jobs are under threat or have lost them already?
Thats whats important from my perspective.
It could be Matt Tootle I might have more empathy with - as a non league player
Down the ladder - club staff who dont have the choice to clean or administer in the football market are facing dire financial straits.
Good luck to him.

Whats the problem in pointing out the reality for the many, not the few?

I don’t think anyone was looking for empathy for Shotton I think the point of the thread was just the OP noticing Shotton is still without a club and it being a bit of a surprise. Nothing more, nothing less. You seem to have took the thread the wrong way and started going onabout his wages and the fact you don’t feel sorry for him whilst no one else really has

Would certainly like us to offer Shotton something long term, likely be willing to accept massively reduced terms just to stay fit if nothing else, plus its a position were struggling in

Would imagine quite a few will be looking for short term contracts to stay fit this season, should help if were short at the end of the window. Some good players without a club

Agreed, at CB he lacked the positional awareness and often get caught pressuring the ball too high up the pitch. I remember two games running last season, he was playing CB and chased the striker back to the half way line. The striker laid it off to a midfielder who played someon in where Shotton should have been at CB and we conceded.

RWB, gets to use his throw, he isn't too bad for a CB lumbering forward, with the side line to help him he can defend.

When I posted this thread I didn't expect Shotton would receive negative posts.

I understand that he walked away during a time when we needed all hands at the pump, but I don't think there is one of us who wouldn't have done the same. I am expected to take a large pay cut in September and have made arrangements to leave my current post. Why would I do the same job for less?

Footballers are no different.

To be fair he hasn’t had many at all negative posts and rightly so. Most have been positive
