Hunting the Rolex Rippers

There’s an old guy that I cut the grass for whilst hes away in Thailand most of the year. I’ve being doing it years. He brings me back a Rolex every year for doing it. I must have about 15 now. Must easily be getting on to being worth a hundred quid now.

It's disgraceful, but I wouldn't risk my life over my watch that's for sure.

Is it really "risking your life" ?

I spend c200 days a year in London with an expensive watch on my arm, and never had any trouble. The chance of encountering one of these people is minimal, especially when you consider how many people are walking around London at any one time with a expensive watch on their arm.

You're probably equally likely to get hit by a car or fall down an open man hole cover.
I am taking a Timex to Stamford Bridge

Rolex is brand in the main for people that lack taste. People who are genuinely into watches don't really go for them. They obviously attract the wrong eyes as well. The brand is regularly linked with criminality (at least in the UK) whether that be in terms of the dealer or customer.

Just to mention, a brand even worse than Rolex is Richard Mille. If you got one in a Christmas cracker you'd be disappointed.

Hate to agree with head troll, and his last sentence is utterly wrong, but I think he's right about Rolex.

People who care about watches and how they are made tend to avoid them. Much like ferraris, I get the impression People wear a Rolex in order to tell YOU they can afford a Rolex. A more expensive, say, Patek Phillipe for example, will also be more subtle and less noticeable.

Rolex is the birkin bag of watches

Brilliant watches with excellent longevity and build quality, of course, but all the nonsense with not being able to buy them unless you look or act a certain
way when you go in the shop to actually buy one has comically over valued them versus as an exampe an omega with a better movement sums
up the brand for me

More status symbol than anything else

Anyone who reckon people who know about watches avoid Rolex, obviously don't know people who know about watches.

Just about all the major innovations in watchmaking were made by the ex-London, now Swiss family run non-profit company.

The reason they are worth so much, is that they are worth so much. You can make an immediate profit on one, just walking out of the shop and they rarely lose their value.

This, if you see a watch as an investment (and at the price they are you really have to factor it in) then Rolex’s make sense as they appreciate in value rather than similar brands such as Breitling, IWC, Omega or Jaeger which depreciate.

I'm a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to watches and Rolex is the brand the people who just want some flex on their wrist buy.

Don't get me wrong they're great watches, but they're very much a marketing success.

There’s some crap getting spouted on here. This thread was about thieves and not d*ck measuring.
I don't think anyone is doing that.

However there is some relevance to the comments. People believe Rolex to be worth a lot. Which is why they get stolen. If you can affor dit you can buy a more subtle watch from a brand that won't get you robbed but will provide similar quality.

Likewise, I hate to agree with the troll but agree with him on both the Rolex point but especially the Richard Mille one, they're horrific and although obviously great pieces of engineering they look like a 6 year old has designed them.

To be fair the robbers on this programme didn't exclusively focus on Rolex, they had their eyes on (from memory) Jaeger-LeCoultre and Patek Phillipe too.

Did I put in the right number of commas?

I’m not sure about that SmallTown, there’s one or two connoisseurs of watches giving advice.

How you anyway, how’s married life treating you?
Fair enough, I don't see it as a d measuring contest I guess. I love a good watch myself. I can't afford a nice one, and wear a cheap samsung smartwatch but I still have an interest in them and liek talking about them. You're right though, the thread got sidetracked with that chat and I was complicit there.

I'm good thanks. Hope all is well with you

Agreed completely but I do like them, the curved engineering is insane even if the styling is my first casio. If I win the lottery they are definitely on my must buy list. Along with an Aston Martin and one fifth of a house
