HS2

So HS2 without the HS bit?

Sunak is weak as p*ss. He has clearly been bullied or been given a political wedgie from doners/RW loons/beneficiaries to make sure HS2 goes to Euston.

The Birmingham - Manchester leg will either be quietly kicked into the long grass.......or more than likely passed to Labour for their headache/hot potato.

So we’ve spent billions to be a laughing stock! Was never convinced of the business case and was sure it would end up exactly like this in a total sh##show.

Thing that amazes me about the whole HS2 debate - regardless of what side you’re on - is that the North East isn’t even mentioned in dispatches. Some, early tenuous thought that it might one day extend to Newcastle but lost in the very early days. Since then there’s been a raging debate around needing to connect North and South and yet the NE just doesn’t get mentioned as part of any of it, almost as if the NE isn’t part of the north. I find it very weird that more is not made of this, why do we so readily accept being left out?

I'm amazed you're amazed really, the Tories couldn't give a shiny shyte for the North in general or the North East in particular. I doubt they could find the North East of England on a map of England with a compass in the corner.

Shouldn't have been built in the first place - waste of £
Should have started building North to South from both Leeds & Manchester to Birmingham.. & then on to London.

I’m amazed you’re amazed he’s amazed tbh.

Apparently they’re going to talk about investing the HS2 money in the North East, North West and Wales networks instead as it would bring a greater and quicker return on investment. The problem is they haven’t mentioned it to any of the politicians in those areas, so it’s clearly just lip service and we can expect those supposed investments to either disappear at the next election or be otherwise diminished to the odd paint job while they get rid of all of the ticket offices.

HS2 was never meant to benefit all of England. It only really benefits London. The commuter belt stretches out further. House prices might ease in towns surrounding London. People in Birmingham/Manchester can work in London.

Living in the North but working in London, on London wages, is economically viable for people. Living in London and working in the North on northern wages is not. Its about taking the talent pool of workers of the North and absorbing them into London's.

Absolutely. HS2 was just branding. It was always about adding capacity to get more workers into London, not the 10 minutes saved getting there.
