Howson

I've got to admit I've been critical of howson especially under monk and pulis I thought he was a bit of a nothing player but since his performances in the back 3 last season and since hes been moved back into midfield hes been different class. I suppose it's a case of players needing time to settle but I'm pleased we now look like we have the player we all expected when he came albeit in a different role. Fair play to him and long may it continue

I didnt watch it yesterday as I was travelling abroad just kept a track of the score but he has been a class apart for a while now completely wasted at full back tho never liked him there but how well has he slotted back in to midfield. After spending a good amount of time playing either RW RB or cb to go back into cm and play like he is personally I'm impressed with him.

I was kind of making the point of howson performances over a decent amount of time tho Ben. It's not easy to be shifted from one position to another and so on then go back to your original position and do well. It's made me realise hes a class act even if I wasnt too impressed with some of his performances out of position at RB but from what I've seen against Bournemouth and watford he ran the midfield for me. Glad morsy is showing what he can do after watching him on his debut against Barnsley I was concerned but warnock knows his onions got to trust him

Cancelled his goal out with a very clumsy challenge giving the penalty away, a bit meh yesterday on the whole from him

I thought he was very good yesterday, providing some drive on the ball into the final third. Morsy, Howson and (a player with faults) Saville seem to be a midfield with different qualities that will hopefully become the mainstay this season.

He is certainly benefiting from having a set position and whilst he will never be a player that I can take to I think he has done a job this season, so credit where it is due. As for the penalty, I was initially cursing the challenge. Then I thought back to the cup match v Shrewsbury and their 3rd goal. He basically watched their scorer, instead of trying to get a challenge in. I suppose it is hypocritical to criticise both examples so I wont criticise yesterdays.

I like howson, always have done. I just don't get it though, his time at Norwich and Leeds, he took a lot of the free kicks in front of goal. Then just stopped when he came here

Howson's a strange one. When we signed him I was expecting him to be a box-to-box goalscoring midfielder. I think that's always been my main issue with him - he doesn't score enough goals.

Weirdly he has always performed better for us at RB/RWB or CB. Think he's looked decent playing in a deeper midfield role under Warnock and it was good to see him score yesterday, but to me it's still a mystery as to why he's never really performed for us playing in his supposed natural role.

Personally I always think box to box midfielders are more effective when you have a big physical type of number 9. They can then run in behind or pick up knock downs. We haven't really had such a centre forward since we signed Howson, Mcnair or Saville.

Agree to an extent but we had Hugill as our number 9 and Howson only managed to score 1 goal all season, and Saville only scored 4.

To be fair Hugill was on his **** more than he was in the air.
I suppose its a conundrum for Warnock. I can't currently see our forwards getting 50 goals a season to help make up the shortfall from midfield. I am quite looking forward to how Warnock sets us up going forward to deal with it. He keeps mentioning that we should have scored more after each game. I still hope for another forward coming in.

For me howsons greatest asset is his composure on the ball. He really stood out last season as we spent most of it a disorganised rabble. It was like watching a grown up playing amongst a bunch of kids.

Given his goal scoring record at Norwich he’s not the midfielder I thought we would be getting when we signed him.

He’s a 7/10 player every week wherever you line him up. Top attitude and good pro too. I saw McNair already said something last week about not enjoying playing at the back, Howson spent months playing there last season, didn’t moan once and probably had his best games.

When he first came he drifted a bit for me - I don't if that was 100% him or how he was managed i.e. role given. He might have been crowded out a bit in his first season. For example I noticed he played well at Millwall when we drew 2-2 in August 2018 and when we took off Leadbitter and Clayton and Howson was left to control and sweep up from a set back midfield role, almost on his own. The game changed completely and we scored 2 late goals to rescue a point.

He's always been a good player at this level.
It was strange just how much grief he got after a slow start at the club, people went on like we'd signed some donkey.
