Howson to Sunderland....?

I’d give him the two year deal but I do agree that his legs will go eventually. What if we offered a player/u23 coaching role the second season?

Really need to secure Howson- he is a very important player to us and would take a helluva lot to replace with equal quality
Howson frustrates me. I was very excited when he was brought in during the Monk era. I felt he was a perfect replacement and possibly an improvement on Leadbitter, especially in terms of goalscoring. However, with the hindsight of the subsequent 6 or so years I don't think losing him would be so disastrous. He's a decent player. But we've pinned our hopes on his abilities every year in the heart of midfield and every year fallen short, many years with him as captain. Conscious that's not Howson's fault at all, but his inconsistency is also apparent. He has been a decent player during a bad spell - see Barry Robson. But at his age and taking his 6 year stay into account, him leaving us would not be a disaster. Its an opportunity to improve, just as we did when Robson left!

That very much depends on who we can sign. Overall our record hasn’t been great especially in recent times

He's just been voted player of the season....

Agreed 100%, I just don't believe losing Howson would be cataclysmic. He is replaceable if in worst case scenario he gets a better offer elsewhere.

Absolutely and at times this season he's looked as good as I've ever seen him in a Boro shirt. Howson has mostly been a stalwart player for us. But he has been at the centre of every team since Monk and every team has fallen just that bit short. Not necessarily a reflection on him but at times he has been found wanting. If he did decide to move on I don't think it's an absolute disaster is all I'm suggesting.

I think last season has been Howson's best season of the six years he's been here. If (and only if) thats due to Wilders management of him then he could be a big player for us next season too but I'd hate to end up in the position we ended up with Mendieta where we've got a player on decent money who can't do it any more

Longer it goes on the more likely he is to leave. He's obviously wise to explore all his options but I can't see us offering him the same wages for another two years (I'd be surprised if any of the clubs in the championship could bar those with parachute payments). If we are sticking to our one year offer, I can see him ultimately leaving. Big hole to fill, but let's see if Payero, McGree, Crooks and Tav are up to it. Only time will tell. Not overly confident but you never know!

Sunderland have some money behind them,
they could blow us out of the water financially. If I were them I would be looking to add some Championship experience. Howson and Peltier would be on the list if I were Alex Neil
Thanks 👍

I felt the same at one stage but he's looked the part playing in the holding midfield role.

I say offer him a one year deal on the same wages, and a two year deal on reduced terms. If he rejects both offers then we should move on.

He's at the stage of his career where his age is going to catch up with him sooner rather than later. We should be thinking long-term. We don't want a situation where we end up in the Premier League and have a player on our books whose legs have gone, meaning we'll have a player on high wages who won't be able to actually contribute much.

Dreyfus has just 41% of the club, the previous jokers have 59% and haven't a pot to **** in.
The billionaire will have to step up and do what he hasn't done so far.
They lost £12m in the year to July 2021 and will have done similar this season at least. The club is under water at book value already, though not to our sort of levels.
I don't see why they can blow anything out of the water just now.
