Howson - Right Back

Mentioned it in the recent o'brien thread, but whats everyones thoughts on Howson going right back again?

He was excellent when he filled in there before in my opinion, and i still think he's more than capable of playing there now.

Smith has been utter garbage ever since he signed that contract extension, and as much as i like dijksteel - he's always injured.

Allows Hackney and O'Brien to play in the centre - while keeping howson in the team. As i wouldn't want any of those 3 on the bench personally.

Problem is that up until now, without Howson in centre midfield we have struggled and looked lightweight. Perhaps one of these new centre-mids. changes that?

We have hardly seen Smith this season, and I would suggest that having him back and fully match sharp would be the best all round. At his best, he is a very good player IMO. Some of his performances last season were top class. Like many others he seemed to run out of steam towards the end of the season though.

Yea fully agree smith was excellent at one point, everyone was raving about him.

I don't know what it was but his performances just fell off a cliff more so than anyones i thought.

Added to that - the absolutely idiotic red card the other week. He can be a red/yellow waiting to happen.

Blackburn away i would play all 3 in midfield, Howson, Hackey and O'brien in a 4-3-3 , a slight change of shape with howson in front of the back
four and o'brien and Hackey box to box

Not a change in philsophy, just a tweak, when we get more points and confidence we can go back to using a 'number 10'

Think we need to play with a solid foundation in the new few games

Smith is a good right back at this level, he will always be first pick

I think we need him in midfield. Regardless of O'Brien etc.

Keep him in midfield where he's influential. Play him alongside O'Brien and push Hackney further on for a while to give us a bit more solidity. Smith at right back

Prior to West Brom, he was averaging a red card every 107 games. That average is now one every 80 games. I'm not sure that constitutes a red card waiting to happen.

I think you've also got to allow for the fact that he was probably thrown in a little early after a long injury lay off. By the time Blackburn comes around, he'll have had another 3 weeks of training and more likely to be up to speed.

Given he'll be seen as back up to O'Brien, if he doesn't start, then its unlikely he'll be playing at RB and risking injury I'd have thought.

Nothing wrong with Smith if he's protected by Jones. Same with anyone playing right back.

The world of a difference is Akpom. Linked up midfield and arrack, brought people in to the game, never lost the ball, scored goals. We've replaced him with a spud.

I don't know about anybody else but I think Howson doesn't seem as mobile as in previous seasons. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 2 goals we have conceded this season where he has got nowhere near closing his man down, who has gone on to score. Those being Swift at West Brom and QPR's first on Saturday. As others have alluded to I think the way to go, at least in the meantime, will be Howson and O'Brien behind Hackney but we all know it won't happen in a month of Sunday's

The way the squad is looking at the minute, I would be inclined to play Howson behind O'Brien and Hackney in a DLP/anchor role he probably doesn't have the legs he had but can read the game well which would take some pressure off the defence. It would then allow the wingback to go forward more and overlap the 2 'wingers' who can cut inside and create or score. The formation would be slightly adjusted but the actual way of playing and football philosophy would stay pretty much the same. That's just my humble opinion.

Agree on all that. He was certainly blowing badly in the last match, couldn't really run in the last 10 mins

As said earlier we need someone to set up and do something like what Chuba did IE take the forward pass from midfield and make the right decision next be it hold up, move on quickly to the side or take it past the first man. That gave all the midfield a moment to change shape and take defenders out of position and all the other forwards time to make runs off the ball. Who do we have that’s close to good enough to be this seasons Chuba?
