I think we also pretty much did a deal with Strachan a few games before Southgate was sacked.
it was clear that Gibson thought very highly of Robson, and maybe in a bit of awe. Sacking him was always going to be a difficult decision for him. Clearly he went about it the wrong way perhaps but in the end it was the right decision albeit a year or two too late?I remember that summer and he was never really sacked, he just sort of drifted away and then McClaren was appointed. It is odd that someone like Gibson essentially didn't have the balls to tell him.
And yeah the booing of him wasn't great but it had become very toxic earlier in the season.
The majority of the booing that day came from the North Stand I believe. Those kind of fans are the first to disappear on relegation.
The same typical tartan blanket, flask of Alta Rica twąts that disappeared in 1982
I'm pretty sure it was. Hadn't it emerged that Venables wasn't staying and had a gig lined up on ITVs version of MOTD. There was concern at the time that Robbo would remain and pick up the reins again.I always thought the booing was to ensure gibbo got the picture that the fans didn’t want him back again after venables walked away.
It would have been extremely harsh to have sacked him any earlier.it was clear that Gibson thought very highly of Robson, and maybe in a bit of awe. bit of a low point from our fans that day. Robson put his heart and soul into the club. He never ever treated us as a stepping stone like SMac or Wilder, moved us up to another level, let us dream, gave us some of the best days in the clubs history. None of that era could have happened under another person. He transformed the club and you can see it hurt him to be so poorly treated at the end.The majority of the booing that day came from the North Stand I believe.
Should have brought a top class coach in to work under him, no disrespect to Anderson and Gordon Mc. But as a leader and figurehead of the club Robson was the best we had at that time, if we'd got top quality experienced coaches around him I think it would have workedIt would have been extremely harsh to have sacked him any earlier.

Then we lost Ziege but spent a lot of money revamping the squad, and Robbo couldn't get a tune out of it. Especially Boksic.
Venables' intervention probably showed Gibson what could be achieved with proper coaching.
