How do you pronounce Middlesbrough?

How the name came about was mentioned by suzi dent on countdown recently something to do with hills
Middle settlement between Durham and Whitby for the monks ?

Anyway as someone who works with Londoners I constantly get asked about how Middlesbarra are doing.

Born in Middlesbrough but spent majority of my life in the stockton/norton area
The Burra and middlesbre (the bre bit pronounced like the beginning of breath is the best way I can explain it)

Suzi dent 'a borough/brough is originally a place that has a forcified fortress or something that was protected on high ground'

I remember back in the day that older blokes used to say Middlesbror - more emphasis on last syllable. I have the opposite, virtually no emphasis on the end, sort of Middlesbr...

Is it just me but I've always found men have a slightly different accent to women in Mbro. Blokes sound more South Durham (with the scouse thrown in) whereas women sound more North Yorkshire. Is that a thing?
