How did we become a boring run of the mill championship side???

From playing exciting front foot aggressive football, we’ve gradually turned into a plodding mid table championship side. The blame lies with Carrick whom I thought was going to be an excellent manager even about 5/6 games ago, but I can’t really see us returning to our swashbuckling best unfortunately.
I think we will miss out on the playoffs and Carrick will leave in the summer if not sooner.

The team we had out today just isn't a patch on the team we had during Carrick's first season.

Carrick's poor in-game management skills weren't exposed as much that season because we often had enough attacking talent in the side to blow teams away.

We are a run of the mill Champo team because that is our budget. It is simple as that, for me.
We are trying to be cute with our signings to make up the difference but we have what we can afford to maintain. (or Steve Gibson can maintain, i should say)

The teams that come down from the Prem have far more money that we have, and like Leeds, the parachute payments can even allow them to maintain those budgets if they fail to get promoted.
Obviously, like with Karanka, a new manager and tactics can bring a team out of the doldrums to get promoted. Cooper did it with Forest. Ipswich did it. Luton did it.

There are a few teams very similar in size and number of fans and same budget: Cov, WBA, Stoke, Hull, Makems, Norwich. None of whom can compete financially with relegated teams from the Prem.

When you have league one or two standard players as regulars in the side. We are a very average side. The alarm bells have been going off for a while at home. You can lose regular away it doesnt matter, the home support and displays matter a lot.

When we look at Luton. Although they came straight back down from the Premiership, they got promoted with little money spent and with players who had been at the club since its days in the journey from the lower leagues. They didn't have the pulling power or the financial clout of Boro, but shrewd management and determination got them up. Not saying it's an identical template for each club, but it's possible without throwing money at promotion. We have players of quality, internationals with experience, who are way capable of putting up a fight. It's frustrating, but we haven't overcome the obstacles and fallen at the last fence too many times.

I feel for Michael Carrick, but it clearly isn't working to plan. I hope I eat my words come May.

And Luton are now a good bet for a second relegation.

I agree with most of your points and it is getting harder for a team who’s been in the Championship for a while but Carrick is definitely not helping himself and us with his stubbornness around tactics and substitutes.

No side can be 'swashbuckling' for 46 games without rotation. Unfortunately due to injuries we can't have that rotation at the moment so a lot of the players are cooked.

ELL, Doak, Azaz and Hackney basically play every minute of every game as they don't have proper replacements and its telling. Doak especially could have done with 3-4 games on the bench but we've now sold the only other suitable right midfielder.

We’ve had/have this players injured.. or sold without replacement.
