Houchen 51 per cent in latest opinion poll

Suppose really, it will be better if Houchen gets re-elected and then Labour gets the keys to No 10.

Then the NAO will start looking at Teessworks and he will hopefully get his comeuppance as a public figure rather than one who has scuttled away defeated.

Being re-elected he may well win the battle but the war will have just started.......where's he going to be without his bestie Gove protecting him......
That is what I was thinking.

You’re starting finally to realise how thick and lazy the English voters really are ?
Note how I didn’t mention Welsh Scottish and the Irish because they are all brighter than the English when it comes to figuring out politicians in terms of what’s morally acceptable and just the best most compassionate way forward for our society
The same Irish that regularly vote for bigots you mean?

If you lose you win anyway 👍
Good hands kinda 😁

So you're saying it's better if Houchen gets re elected ?

You cheeky so and so 😁😁

IF Labour get elected, Houchen gets elected he's bolloxed. They will go after him, high profile casualty 👍

IF Labour get elected, Houchen doesn't, they will still go after him but he won't be as high profile. But end up a disgraced Lord (and that takes some doing TBF)

IF Tories get in, Houchen gets in, Teesside is f*cked. Houchen gets richer.

If Tories get in, McEwen gets in, Teesside is again f*cked......just someone will put up a bit of a fight on the regions behalf.

Would love to see that smug get get his comeuppance, however it happens (not you Nobby, Ben) 👍

Guardian’s interpretation of events.
Looks like Tory’s will keep Birmingham and Teesside

Come on Juninhoburger - step it up 😂

YouGov poll of Tees Valley suggests 65% of 2019 Tory voters sticking with Houchen - that includes don’t knows.
That would mean Houchen is keeping onboard 2x as many 2019 Tory voters as the Conservatives are nationally (where 33-35% are sticking with Cons with YouGov)
Oh and by the way, despite that, this poll *still* implies a 20 pt swing from Tory to Labour (a 7 pt winning margin, down from 46).
That’s also bigger than the national swing since May 2021 (about 15 pts in polls), consistent with the proportional swing we’ve been seeing.
That said, Houchen’s baseline was pretty extraordinary in the first place. His winning margin in 2021 was far beyond what you’d expect for the area and reflected his personal popularity.

Has Houchin done a deal with Reform as they have not stood a candidate. As far as I am aware Reform have stood candidates in all other mayoral and PCC elections.

Not as far as we're aware. There were only ever two candidates for PCC here and originally 4 for Mayor.

Reform have stood in the North East Mayoral and Durham PCC elections as well Manchester, Liverpool, West Yorks South Yorks and York/North Yorkshire but not in Tees Valley. I find this strange that they have not stood a candidate against Houchen.

Nobby will vote Tory anyway
Thanks 👍
There are no facts until Friday morning.

This is one poll, here's another

Problem with both polls is we don't know the direction of travel, or more importantly the speed. It's basically a toss up between the two at this stage. Regardless of your social media preferences.
Just to play devil's advocate could the more recent poll show that Houchen is pulling ahead?

Apropos of nothing I notice the latest polling this morning has the Tories at 24%. After all THIS (gestures vaguely), there's still a quarter of the electorate who think, yep, more of the same please. They can't all be pensioners and hedge fund managers?
I come across an awful lot of people who cannot understand that it's Tory policies that are keeping them back and just say that it would be worse under Labour. Not that they can explain why, of course.

It takes some a little bit longer to grasp the truth instead of swallowing the BS.

Remain: 21,181 Leave: 40,177

I think there is a new type of political voter born out of Brexit, the type who treat it a bit like supporting a football team in that they can do no wrong and admitting so would be admitting defeat.

All the issues are part of a Big Woke conspiracy.

Not at all, you've also got the ignorant, the naive, the blindly tribal and also those who look at him and everything he's done either through incompetence or corruption and say, yup that's my kind of guy
