Honestly, do you want to go up this season?

I love this division and worry if we where to go up we'd just struggle and it would potentially ruin the great atmosphere at the club. Imagine 2 more Wilder windows and how much better equipped we'd be to mount a realistic attempt of staying in the Premiership.
Of course i want to go up. There's no point in football if you don't aim for anything.
It's pure speculation to say we'd get loads better. Signings can fail to work out, you can be hit by injuries etc

The only reason to love this division is because there is a prize worth winning. We will struggle to survive in the PL whenever we go up. Last time we were promoted we gave ourselves another season after missing out via the playoffs and it didn't help us stay up. The key these days is if you do struggle then plan ahead to get back as soon as possible. Are there many teams that have done what we did, have 1 season in the PL and then needing 5 years before having another sniff. Most teams these days seem to go up and stay up or yo-yo.

Yes.

I almost certainly won't enjoy the Premier League season as much as a Championship one, unless Wilder plays an absolute blinder, but promotion is what every team is seeking down here and it makes the battle better if you occasionally get the reward.

If we do manage to go up this season then the key thing is to keep our heads. The club in terms of not over spending on Gestede types and the fans not howling for Wilder to be sacked if we are in the bottom 3 all season. Bank the money and then build back stronger in 23/24 should be the idea, with obviously giving it as good a go as possible to stay up next year.

Was having this exact conversation last night over a beer....everyone loves the struggle of promotion campaigns....but hates the premiership treadmill....aspiring to finish 4th bottom is so tedious...
Yet still..... I want the thrill of promotion...the chance to beat the big boys...again...😚

Achievements for clubs like us are few and far between, the cups are unlikely, even the league cup is becoming more important for the top clubs as so many of them are competing on all fronts. Promotion is something we can achieve and celebrate. We will have lots of promotions and relegations. Enjoy the current moment and hope for something special in the premier league knowing it wont last forever.

Hull and Cardiff in the similar time frame as us.

That's just with your 1 season up criteria and not going too far back.
The Championship is riddled with teams that have came down and failed to go back up.
Stoke, Swansea, QPR, Huddersfield (currently), Reading, Derby, etc.

I'd 100% love us to go up, but think we would be much better prepared, and have a better chance of staying up if we went up next year, but of course not going up this year, is no guarantee of going up next year.

Effectively....if I could pick this year or next, I'd pick next year.

I think I actually prefer us doing well in the championship, rather than struggling in the prem, but getting to mid table prem and possibly winning cups/ getting in Europe is the best of all, and struggling in the champ worst of all.

Either way though, under Wilder I think we're now a better side than Norwich, Burnley and Watford, and will be even more so next year.

Once Fulham are gone, I don't feel we would fear anyone in this league, this year or next with who I expect to go up/ come down. Wouldn't fancy being in the Champo with Everton though, and think we would have a good battle against Leeds.

We have to win promotion this season, the time & money Gibbo has invested into the club he deserves the chance to take his club in to the PL

Saying that, as a fan I would sooner us stay in the championship the best league in the world but in reality, money talks, we'll have a far better chance of keeping our better players, the greed is good PL is the place Boro need to be to continue to grow & develop

No guarentee staying another season would have us ready for the PL, that's if we were lucky enough to claim a promotion spot next season

Also note there are several relatively big clubs in our league or the one below who haven't tasted EPL football since our 2009 relegation......Forest, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich etc....

Yes, go up when you can.
When we do I'd hope the club would say that Wilders job was secure come what may and that he'd be given the chance and finances to get us back up if we came down again.
Short term it'd allow us to keep a lot of our younger players and for them to get experience of playing PL opponents week in, week out.

We bombed last time because we did not buy enough quality. We most certainly need to buy quality, some of which could be resold if we did go down.
You should never spend on Gestede types because they are utterly ****, signed at the wrong time.
Invest the money, do not bank it. Good recruitment is investment, not expense.

I absolutely agree that fans need to be supportive and realistic.

Why do people keep asking this?. It's absolutely bizarre, especially in the current climate, that people wouldn't want us to go up at the earliest opportunity. EVERY single player in that squad wants to play in the Premier League at the earliest opportunity so this great atmosphere at the club you talk about takes a beating every time we miss out. Give Wilder two more windows and we would definitely be without the likes of Fry, McNair, Dijksteel, Jones, and Tav and no way would we have the finances, even from their sales, to replace them with better. I think we all agree these players could do a job in the prem so delaying promotion and losing these would mean us having to sign more championship quality players, probably of lesser quality, so would probably take an even bigger investment and squad overall should we go up. And let's be honest, if we are not promoted soonish, would Wilder still be even here?

"I love this division" - I understand the notion that fighting for promotion is much better than fighting relegation but this is what football is all about, it always has been. If you take out that one season in the prem under Karanka, by that I mean the overall length of time we have been in the Championship, how many seasons in this division have actually been enjoyable?
