Was going to stay over but hotels are a tad expensive with the Christmas markets being on.

It's the ongoing issues with Avanti unfortunately.

Unless something drastic changes soon, you've got no chance of sorting any train tickets out in advance. I couldn't even get tickets to London from Manchester this week trying to book about 5 days in advance.
