I know he’s probably not fit enough to play a full game but he’s a massive presence in midfield when he comes on. You can see why he’s ran the midfield in a Premier League and Champions League side, as captain too. You can see his level of experience.

Plenty of people felt he was a waste of a squad number but I think his brief appearances have more than justified his selection and has been the perfect player to come on at times
 
I think he would be nailed on to start without injuries pre tournament. No chance now as Rice and Philips deserve to 'see it home'.

I am as back tracking on rice and philips as Boro signing Bolasie😂. I hold my hands up and say 'I got it wrong' lol.
 
He’s a top player and leader, Model pro. Fit as anything. Powerful runner and brings a different tempo to the game. If he was fit prior to the tournament there is no doubt in my mind he would of been a starter. There is a huge case for him starting on Sunday but I don’t think we will go away from Phillips and Rice now. I think he will play a big part from the bench again and hopefully help us see a win through!
 
The way Southgate has managed him has been brilliant. Would have been very easy to have started him against Germany but even now he probably isn't fully match fit, and Southgate has kept faith with Rice and Phillips.

If Southgate had have started him against Germany he may have ended up injured and out of the tournament, but as it is it's great to think we go into the final with him as a option to either start the game or come off the bench.
