Has there ever been..

It's possible, though I'd be surprised if our recruitment team were that blindsided and put off by Engel in the 2 league matches he'd played that they decided to replace him.
Especially when the fee was fairly decent.
Carrick would have had him for 2 weeks on the training ground and a couple of games. It's entirely possible that he banged on the door and said I don't think this lad is gonna cut it. We need to get someone else in before the window.

The Bangura signing came out of nowhere. He was straight in the team as well.

Akpom had scored twice in just under half the game time, and Mowatt wasn't injured at any point last season, he'd started the previous 4 games at this point.

Akpom scored twice in one game, and then was injured for the next 7 games.

Here's a few comments from fans before those goals...
"If Akpom is in ahead of Coburn the world has gone mad"
" Akpom did literally nothing in many of his previous appearances, at least Connolly got near the ball on occasion"
"I was on about Tav and Watmore. Akpom has been a waste of time."
"Things move on watmore half decent. Akpom garbage"
"He can finish but being a striker above low league levels is about more than just finishing. It's a vital part, and one that Akpom doesn't have, of course."

They continue a little after the goals too...
"Disappointing that we don’t have any better options."
"I think we’ll use Akpom as trade bate maybe."
"Hand on heart, do you think we're going up this season? Akpom up front?"
"If we get another striker then I think akpom gets the 4th spot over him"
"From what I've seen Akpom is probably good enough as no 3/4 option, if we want to go up"
"Same old rubbish! I’m guessing we will say akpom is like a new signing when we fail to bring in anyone"

I enjoyed this one.... "Still better than Akpom. Anyones better than Akpom." .... The players in question were "Kavanagh & Finch"

Another good one... "3 mill and Akpom" when we wanted to sign Jacob Greaves.

And even continued into September...
"He has always liked one of the strikers to drop and link the play, dont think thats either Akpom or Muniz' game"
"Expecting Akpom to save Boro means we really are in a desperate position."

..... some of the posters are posting very similar comments about current players too, but I won't name names 🤷‍♂️

Has there ever been such a mass hypnosis of a fam base to convince them that their team started so fantastically.. when they didn’t. Players that only joined in January had infact been playing all season and had made a much larger impact than they had gone in reality. Chuba Akpom was still not flavour of the month.. fans were probably still moaning about missing out on Strand Larson and perhaps even thinking that Wilder should have been supported with his wish to bring in Dwight Gayle on £50k a week.

Akpom was not there yet.. after two or three seasons. Latte Laff has scored where Akpom had not. Giles was still suspect defensively and folks were not convinced by him what so ever.. Bangura has had 69 minutes in for us.

We do have a problem at right back.. I’m guessing Carrick thinks Smith and Dijksteel will be back soon.. maybe Clarke is further on than we think too?
Spot on.
Well said

We'd been linked with Bangura earlier in the window, so I don't think it was out of nowhere, though it was a surprise to me that we still went back in after signing Engel.

He did go straight in the team, but Engel was also injured on Saturday.

Name names

You've done the hard work. You might as well shame them

(I'm saying this because I'm confident none of those are mine)

I actually remember arguing with my dad from early on last season that Akpom looked a new player and he kept saying he was crap. We rarely disagree on football This started at the Marseille friendly when Akpom looked sharp. I'm still winding him up about it.

And by the way, I don't believe Akpom's turn around in form was fully up to Carrick and his new position. There was signs before that. Yes the no10 position was a great move for him but there was definitely signs of his form improving under Wilder. He just got that injury at a bad time.

You're safe @B_G - In fact, you're CF choices were Akpom + Forss, with Watmore on the bench ;)😂

Here's a good one...
"I think we're really scraping the barrel if we have to use Akpom this season. I know we're short on forwards... but how many chances does this guy need?"

Poster: Ash88

But in my defence, this was in July - I was wrong, and I've learnt from my mistake - Every player in the current squad needs to be given more time before they're written off.

Akpom scored twice in game 3 against Sheffield United...

Coulson replaced Bola.
Engel replaced Giles on the 15th of August.
Bangura has now replaced Coulson, and could well take Engel's spot.

Another graphic with false information on though.
Ah.. I missed the one extra goal that Chubba Akpom scored..

'Coulson replaced Bola, Bangura has now replaced Coulson, and could well take Engel's spot' - that's embarrassing.

Let's have a look at the golden period everyone is still talking about..
We don't want to get into results before Archer and Ramsey got here because.. well what are we even playing at.

Basically the core of that golden period was..

-----------Steffen-----------
Smith--Fry--Lenihan--Giles
----Howson--Hackney----
McGree--Akpom--Ramsey
-----------Archer-----------

as such, like for like.. the best we could manage right is..
-------------Dieng--------------
Smith--Fry--Lenihan--Bangura
------Howson--Hackney-------
McGree--Latte Laff----Rogers
----------Greenwood----------

except.. Smith is injured and Bangura hasn't been available. HUGE

Luton, Blackburn and Norwich earlier on in the season were more important for me.. two of those games the opposition had players sent off.. Forss, McGree and Crooks were integral to that period.. Isaiah Jones certainly played his part. Those two banks of three wins in a row is exactly what we need to see. 20-22 & 29-31 and our first choice fullbacks fit for a good run of games.

Talking about life before Archer and Ramsey doesn't fit the narrative for a lot of fans.

It doesn't matter that we were already 4th in the league, and after Wilder... We had more points per game without Archer than we did with him.

We have their replacements in ahead of schedule, Dieng in for an injured Steffen and Bangura to replace Giles 69 minutes into the season.. we are suffering as a result of Tommy Smith's injury, Anfernee Dijksteel still not being available. This team is like Kerplunk.. pull one straw out and we lose our marbles. Why the **** we didn't go in for Reggie Cannon I do not know.

VDB was promised game time, that's why he chose us over other teams. Maybe he's the future re-incarnation of your beloved Reggie Cannon.

Maybe.. I was thinking of Reggie as a replacement for Paddy McNair tbh

Seen as Anfernee Dijksteel is out of favour., or seemed to be.. perhaps a long term successor for him too.

Good point about RVDB tho.. although McNair got in before Rav..

I knew you'd definitely tried to get one on me 🤣

1937/38 season.

Manchester city won the league in 1936/37 - following season relegated.

More recently.... Barnsley finished 5th in the Championship in 2020/21... 23 wins. 74 points. 7 wins in a row, only lost 3 games at home all season, nearly beat Chelsea in the cup.

In 2021/22, they finished dead last and only won 6 games. -40 goal difference.
