Harry Potter Reboot - Why?

I personally love the films as they have been a massive part of many a family film night with my daughter. So many fantastic memories.

You can do so much more with a TV series than a film and TV is where the big budgets are these days. They had to cut a lot of the story from the books for the films. As much as I do like the films the young actors were pretty rubbish. They will definitely struggle to beat the adult casting from the films though, they were all excellently cast. The technology is way better to do it justice now as well. The early ones look very dated now.

Rickman's Snape was mentioned above, and he was brilliant, but he was 20 years older than he was supposed to be.

I've always said they should remake it as a TV series. It does feel a bit soon but it's actually 12 years since the last one was released and 22 years since the first one.

Getting the casting right for the kids is the most important thing. It's a really difficult age to get right for a 7 series story because they have to be young enough to be believable in year 1 and age appropriately together for 7 years.

Top ten US box office 22

Top gun maverick. Sequel.
Black panther wakanda forever. Marvel.
Dr strange. Marvel
Avatar 2. Sequel.
Jurassic world dominion. Franchise.
Minions gru. Franchise.
The batman - TBH it's hard to say what this is. Just one of a seemingly endless string of batman films.
Thor love and thunder. Marvel.
Spiderman. Marvel.
Sonic the hedgehog 2. Sequel.

You get the first non franchise film at number 12 with Elvis. They want a guaranteed audience. Like the TV companies.

Go back 10 years you'll see two non franchise/sequel films.
Go back 20 you'll see four (I think - one might be Pixar)
Go back 30 and you'll see six
40 it's eight.

Blimey I think I've found a pattern! 50 years ago....
Yep not a single sequel or franchise film in the top ten in 1972.

So the number of original properties in 2032 in the US top ten will be minus 2. I'm not sure how they will do that. Maybes they'll remake all the marvel films.

Last tango in Paris?

edit: I was 4 then mind so never saw it on the big screen if it is that
Yes the most overhyped boring film ever made. Well not quite but an odd example of how mass publicity and the Mary Whitehouse brigade actually made the company that made Last Tango a lot of money.

I suppose when they throw £50m per episode at this they will produce an entertaining programme. On screen we have seen countless reboots of classic books. One at the moment Great Expectations is about the 7th remake. HP is a classic book series for children there is no doubt about that. Whether they will be enjoyed by a new generation or not I can understand why they would do this for the money.

Well almost all entertainment is done for the money, be it going to a gig, a great meal at a restaurant, reading a book or playing a game. Even this forum its clear at times; people did it to get paid.

Like nano said, you can do a lot more with tv and if the casting is right it could be excellent.

Harry Potter is still hot property, despite a campaign to ignore the new game it set a new record for most viewed game in twitch and sold 12 million copies making just shy of $1b in revenue, and that is just a game taking place in a time before the movie / book timeline. the fantastic beasts movies, despite being poor, have made $1.8b between them so clearly there is a desire for more from fans of the franchise

The films were great, but if you've read the books, you'll know that there's loads of really important plot stuff that was missed out of them.
This reboot you would imagine will address this.

And then maybe a Marauders series could follow it.

I love the books read them all several times, the films I find ok but as previously mentioned they leave way too much detail out which leaves holes in the storylines. The same for me is The last Kingdom series which the original Bernard Cornwell books are in my top 5 book series of all time, but I can't stick the series as it left too much out which changed the feel of it.
I would probably watch the Harry Potter series to see if I get into it, but I am dubious that they can do the books justice really.

There is so much material, the universe so broad and unexplored, a massive fan base with so many possibilities they can keep it going for years across different subjects/timelines. Like Star Wars, GoT, LoTR etc.
I disagree with this a bit. Nothing in those "universes" come close to the original story. The original source material is always superior and anywhere where they are just using some sort of thematic link to the original seems like a worse version of the original. A reboot/re-telling/re-imagining of the original can be better than just some addition with characters/stories that nobody cares about.

A few good examples of where they have massively improved a film adaptation with a series adaptation was the "His Dark Materials" series which was miles better than the Golden Compass film and the Reacher series. Both of those adaptations could stay closer to the books because there's more time for the story to develop than trying to cram it all into a film. Reacher wasn't a re-boot of the film because they used a different book but it was a re-boot of the introduction of a character.

Golden compass is ok on its own if you haven't read the books but when you have it is all kinds of wtf

It made a lot of money but there was a huge religious backlash so I was surprised when they did the series but it was great

Fantastic beasts is an example of expanding the universe poorly- they've made money but they're not that great and I don't think many will have the same affinity towards the characters and story

A bit like Jennifer Lawrence not wanting to do any more hunger games so Collins went with a prequel, I loved the original books but really couldn't gel with the new prequel. Maybe the movie will bring it to life more, but I doubt it. But if they did a new hunger games movie with Lawrence, I reckon it would be a smash, even though her story was already told. People like familiarity.

Bottom line is it's useful to expand these universes because there's already an interest, fan loyalty etc.

But it doesn't give them a pass to make something ****. Whether it's a pre-established universe/world etc or not, you still need a good story and strong characters.
