I grew up in a family that remembered the Munich air disaster clearly so I took more than a passing interest in the tragic events on Feb 6th 1958.
I made a point of visiting the "Tunnel" that they have created at Old Trafford and read so many accounts of what happened on that fateful evening in Munich.
None more poignant than the story of Harry Gregg and how he escaped relatively unharmed but risked his life to go back into the wreckage to pull team mates from the fire and amongst those he puled off the rescue of an infant. His warm Northern Irish lilt crackled with emotion each time you heard him recount those events. Amazingly just months after that night he played for NI in the 1958 World Cup.
It is with sadness I hear of his passing this morning. A true hero in my eyes.
