Happy Retirement Rolls Royce Williams

He was a phenomenal footballer, if he didn’t sustain the injuries he did he would have been playing in a top 6 premier league side.

Slight exaggeration in my opinion. He was decent enough at Championship level but not sure he ever had it in him to play at the very top level.

A bit like Paddy McNair I remember him as a versatile player who never really had any one position he properly excelled in but could be good in several. Had a decent passing range.

I think his injuries hampered his development and career progression though, but even at his very best I would have said top end Championship/lower level Premier League.

Although Rhys Williams looked good for us (I recall he was probably our best CB and best CM at the same time), I do think it was largely down to the fact we were a shower of sh!te at the time.

We weren't a great team when he was our main player, which is probably why he stood out.

I would have loved to have seen him in a stronger team for us to see what his potential could've been, but it does seem that injuries took his toll on him.

One other player I would have loved to have seen play in a better team for us is Barry Robson. Loved him as a player. I honestly think he dragged us through the couple of seasons he was here.

Robson was a proper player and I agree I would have loved to have seen him in a stronger team as he was a great player. In my view he could have done it at a higher level as he could tackle, pass and shoot and had good awareness. Probably the only success story of our Scottish experimental phase.

Robson was outstanding. Made everyone around him look amazing in a proper downturn period for the club. Would not have done anywhere near as well with Mogga in 2011/12 with a midfield two of Nicky Bailey and Willo Flood/Marouane Zemmama/Malaury Martin etc etc

Agree.

I think the summer he left was the same summer we signed Leadbitter. From a leader/captain point of view in the dressing room I think it was important we replaced Robson and in Leadbitter we did just that.

He was my favourite player for a small period of time, genuinely thought he would go on to become a Premier League player, obviously until the injuries took their toll. Always thought he was a better midfielder than defender, controversially.

I met him once in what used to be The Keys on Linthorpe Road, on a Tuesday night, he was injured at the time but he was happy to have a quick chat and a selfie, I think I told him he was my favourite player, probably due to the £2 vodka and cokes I’d been having 😂

Agree. We didn't have much to be positive about at the time. He was decent but not spectacular. He was pretty good on the ball but positionally a bit all over the place in defence. The comparison with McNair is fair but he was probably better. McNair has never been good enough to make any position his so it's not exactly a ringing endorsement. If he wasn't called Rhys and given the name Rolls Rhys and he was just Steve or Graham or something then he wouldn't have got the reputation he did.

I always remember him going out on a Monday night in Crown and I remember seeing him with Grounds and someone else, sure it was Maxi Haas? But Flood and Robson weren't allowed in at the time as the bouncers thought they were absolutely steaming drunk yet Robson was having none of it and needed calming down :ROFLMAO:

Robson was definitely a 'heated'/'hot headed' character both on and off the pitch! And for that, I loved him !

That Hull keeper is still diving for that screamer now.

Good luck to the lad, he was a cultured footballer at Championship level, confident in possession, could read a game very well and had potential. His injuries took their toll however, and despite Mogga’s Rolls Royce comment (I thought a tad over-egging the pudding), he never got the opportunity to see if he could fulfil that potential. He was an honest reliable and talented utility player in a poor team.

Jesus, Maxi Haas - I’d forgotten about him. Think he was playing the wrong sport!

Amazed he's only 34 to be honest. Feels like he's been around so long he should be about 40 or something.

Some beard on him.

Rhys was talented - heartbreaking injuries hugely impacted his career.
He was a really nice bloke when at Boro.
A cracking Perth lad. Not a bad spot to retire.
All the best Rhys.

An above average Championship player shining in a poor side. It's good to see that he's managed to carry on playing for so long after his early career injuries.

Barry Robson was really good and wish we had caught him earlier in his career. Matthew Bates was better than Rhys Williams imo.. Paddy McNair is a good comparison
